Young Astros fare well in Stratford tournament

A pair of Mitchell Astros OBA teams brought home some hardware from the Stratford tournament over the June 12-14 weekend.

The DG Eckert Construction 9U Astros went undefeated in round-robin play with three convincing victories before doubling their hosts in the semifinal 6-3 Saturday night to try to beat the rain and then losing an extra-innings heartbreaker 5-4 in the final to St. Thomas.

Facing Guelph in their first game, the Astros’ collective bats were on fire, starting in the second inning when they jumped on the carousel and made their way around the bases to score seven runs and build an 8-2 lead en route to a 14-2 rout. Ryker Chessell, Griffey Johnston and Henry Verberne’s hot bats earned them each a double to pace the attack. 

The next morning, the Astros came out swinging again, showing Pelham the depth in their lineup in a decisive 16-1 victory.  Pelham didn’t stand a chance against Mitchell’s tight defence. Verberne smacked three doubles to highlight the offence. 

Lakeshore experienced a similar fate in the next game, as Rowly Havens paced the attack by scoring three of Mitchell’s 12 runs in a 12-2 triumph to finish round-robin play. The Astros again flashed the leather defensively, making great plays both in the infield and out.

Due to the forecast of rain the following day, the semifinal game was moved from Sunday to Saturday evening. Despite playing back-to-back, the 9U Astros were up for the challenge against the host team. Mitchell came out hitting once again, recording three runs in the first inning with Stratford unable to answer until the top of the fifth, bringing them to within one run. After being blanked for three straight innings, Oliver Schoonderwoerd and Will Docking scored in the fifth, building the Astros’ lead to 5-2. Stratford squeaked out one more run in the sixth, but Mitchell answered, resulting in the 6-3 victory and a spot in the championship final.          

After a good night’s sleep, the Astros were in tough against the other undefeated team from St. Thomas, but Mitchell was ready to battle. Recording the first run of the game in the second inning, Mitchell took an early lead while the Cardinals were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when they were able to cash two runs and take a 2-1 lead. The see-saw result continued until Chessell’s double in the top of the sixth helped move runners into scoring position and Verberne’s sacrifice fly put Mitchell ahead, 3-2. St. Thomas answered in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game and forcing extra innings.

In the eighth, Mitchell’s Ty Walt started on second base and Mason Feltz came in clutch, touching the green and scoring another run. Mitchell just had to hold St. Thomas off to claim victory but, with a couple hard hits, the Cardinals were able to drive in the tying and winning runs, leaving Mitchell as the runners-up.

Also in the Stratford tournament, the Walther’s IDA 11U OBA Astros continued their great start to the baseball season with a third-place finish.

The balanced lineup led to the Astros finishing first overall after pool play and set a matchup with their hosts from Stratford in the semifinal.  Stratford’s pitcher had a fantastic game and the Nationals put up some early runs in an eventual 6-0 victory over Mitchell. Jeter Moses and Emmett Chessell both pitched well in the loss.

In pool play, Mitchell defeated the London Talons 14-4 as the Chessell cousins — Bryce and Emmett — plus Moses pitched well to secure the victory. Henry Wolfe led the offence with three hits while Callahan Gaynor, Karson Jordan, Bryce Chessell and Moses each had two.

Later, against a strong Tillsonburg squad, Sawyer Havens was dominant on the mound in an 11-2 victory while Bryce Chessell led the offense with three hits. Jordan and Gaynor both had two hits, and Moses smacked a huge three-run homer.

In their final game of pool play, almost all team members had a hit in a 14-5 victory over Brantford. Oliver Meyer was excellent on the mound while Jordan, Gaynor and Casen Wolfe chipped in to help shut down the Brantford attack. Danton Millar led the Astros at the plate with three hits while Emmett Chessell, Bryce Chessell, Havens and Moses chipped in with two hits each.
