U17 Hornets' deserving runners-up in Fastballfest

The Mitchell Silo King U17 girls’ fastball team finished as runners-up in the second leg of Fastballfest June 12-13.

Fastballfest was held over two separate weekends, the first involving teams in the U11, U13 and U15 divisions (which unfortunately was cut short because of weekend rain on May 22-24), and the second involving teams in U17 and U21 age divisions.

In the 12-team U17 division, clubs were split into three divisions of four. The local Hornets buzzed their way to a 3-0 mark after pool play, defeating Innerkip 12-10 and Norwich 10-2 on opening day, and then doubled Southwest London 14-7 to give themselves first place and a bye to the semifinal.

In the semifinal — a rematch with Norwich — the Hornets edged their opponents 8-7, needing to overcome a one-run deficit heading into the fifth and final frame. 

Norwich led 4-0 after the top of the first, but Mitchell picked away at the deficit, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame and adding another in the second. A two-out, three-run rally propelled Mitchell to a 6-4 lead after three innings but, after a scoreless fourth, Norwich scored three runs in the fifth and final frame to pull ahead off Mitchell pitcher Sage Dow, who was a powerhouse on the mound the entire weekend.

Needing a rally in their final at-bats, Kinslee Horan hit a lead-off double before Kate Nolan reached base, setting the stage for a two-run game-winning hit from Hallee Vosper to walk off their opponents. 

Against rival Elma in the final, the Express took a 5-0 led after three innings off a tiring Dow, but the Hornets didn’t die, rallying for four runs in the fourth keyed by singles from Ellie MacArthur, Horan, Nolan, Vosper and Dow to draw within a run but that would be as close as they would get in a 7-4 loss. 

Vosper pitched the final three innings in relief. Dow earned the pair of pitching wins on the opening day while Elyn Hannon picked up the victory against Southwest London. 

Locally, Fullarton went 1-3 during action from the five-team U21 division.

The Monteith Ritsma Phillips U11 girls’ team have had a good first month of the new season.  

On May 14, the team took on their town rivals in an exhibition game and battled to an 8-8 tie. Harper Smitjes, Laura Louwagie and Dallas Taylor all scored three runs while Brooklyn Smith pitched the final inning and only allowed one run.

In the Mitchell Fastballfest on May 22, the Hornets defeated Paris 11-10 in their only game before rain washed out the rest of play. The girls battled back from being down 5-1 for an exciting finish. Anna Boersma, Louwagie and Smith all scored two runs while Smith pitched two effective innings. 

Back in league action on May 27 in Zurich, the girls had a slow start and lost 10-4, despite Mitchell scoring all of their runs in the last inning on a triple from Brooklyn Hamilton, followed by a double by Elise Kelly. Hamilton pitched a perfect second inning to keep the game close. 

On June 2, the girls travelled to Exeter to face the Exeter Pink team. None of the pitchers could get comfortable with the pitching mound as Exeter cruised to an 18-5 win. Olivia Eidt scored two runs and Smith crushed a ball for a triple. 

Next up on June 11, the Hornets faced league-leading Seaforth Yellow. Seaforth, behind strong pitching and a solid offensive attack, rolled to a 14-1 triumph. Hamilton had another three up-three down second inning and got help from the defence as Smith caught a line drive at first and Boersma snapped a hard grounder at second to make the play at first. Willow Restemayer scored the only run for Mitchell. 

On June 13, Mitchell was invited to Monkton to play an exhibition game during Elma’s minor ball day. The girls broke out of their slump as everything worked in a 19-0 win. Smith, Kelly and Hamilton all pitched shutout innings while Louwagie hit a huge home run. Smith and Smitjes each scored three runs and Phoebe Pottle-Tschudi scored twice.
