11U Select Astros capture St. Marys tourney title

The Mitchell 11U Select Astros baseball team edged their northern Perth County rivals from Listowel to win the championship of the St. Marys tournament June 26-28.

During round-robin action, Mitchell went 2-1 to advance, defeating Stratford 20-4 and East Mountain 16-1 before coming up a little short in a back-and-forth contest against Oakville, losing 16-14.

Outstanding pitching performances were turned in by Chase Elligsen, Wes Fischer, Everett Douglas, Brooxe Salverda and Logan Crowley to keep the Astros rolling into the playoff round on Sunday, June 28.

The final day began with the Astros taking on the top-ranked team from Binbrook in the semifinals. Elligsen and Kendrick Cook pitched a gem of a game to propel the Astros to a 12-7 win. Logan Crowley stood on his head behind the plate all day in the hot sun while the Astros had lights-out defence turned in by Landon Gould, Will Schoonderwoerd and Douglas, who was a vacuum at first base.

In the final, the Astros took on their northern neighbours from Listowel and, in another see-saw affair, Mitchell prevailed in an exciting 13-12 win. Carter Wydeven had a great game on the mound, going four strong innings. Erica Walt’s double with the bases loaded cashed in three runs and gave the Astros the lead midway through the game. Listowel kept clawing back, however, and the Astros were down two runs going into the seventh and final inning. Lelend Insley doubled in the top of the inning to cash in two runs and tie the game, before Landon Gould ripped another double to score Insley, which would turn out to be the winning run.

Insley pitched two effective innings in the final, and Walt pitched the bottom of the seventh, throwing just nine pitches to close out the victory. Pax Elliott made the catch of the weekend in right field to end the game and seal the Astros victory.
