22U Astros roll to tournament title at home

The Mitchell 22U Astros won four of their five tournament games in mercy-rule fashion June 26-28, proving to their opposition — as well as themselves — they will be a force to be reckoned with as the 2026 season continues.

Hosting 10 other teams in the weekend event, things began on the right foot with a 15-2 thrashing of Whitby followed by a 14-3 defeat of Martingrove that evening. The next day, as the top seed after preliminary play, the Astros continued their winning ways with a 13-3 victory, this time over Halton Hills. propelling them to the semifinals. In that contest, Mitchell kept rolling with a decisive 13-3 win over their rivals from Clinton before downing Port Lambton 5-1 in the championship game.

In the championship, Finn Stewart earned the win on the mound, his second victory of the tournament. He surrendered just three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out three and walking two. Nole Musselman, Jarrett Van Bakel, Dawson Dietz, Quinn Appel and Luke Murray each had one hit for the winners. 

In the semifinal against the Mustangs, Grayson Boreham’s two-run single keyed a four-run first inning to set the tone. Lefty Jake Heinbuch earned the win on the mound, giving up five hits and three runs over five innings, striking out four and walking two. In their 10 hits in the game, Joel Meinen, Zach Rooney, Dietz and Boreham each collected a pair while Dietz and Rooney each drove in three runs.

Meinen had three hits to lead the Astros to their win over Halton Hills, who added to their early lead in the bottom of the third after Meinen and Wil Boreham both singled to centre field, and Appel grounded out, each scoring once. Mitchell totalled 11 hits for the game, with Wil Boreham collecting two in three at-bats. Luke Murray had three of the team’s 12 walks for the game. 

Hunter Reid earned the win for Mitchell, surrendering six hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking none. 

In their win over Martingrove, Murray drove in five runs on three hits to lead their 14-3 victory. Murray hit a two-run double in the second, a two-run triple in the fourth and added an RBI-double in the first inning to set the tone. Mitchell broke the game open with a seven-run third inning. Brayden Taylor singled, scoring one run, Kale Murray grounded out, scoring one run, Musselman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Rooney singled, scoring two runs, and Kellen Russwurm singled, scoring another pair.

Kai Tuttle gave up three hits and three runs (two earned) over two-and-one-third innings, striking out four and walking four, in the win with scoreless relief help from Sam Bolger. 

In their opening win, the Astros easily dispatched Whitby, scoring early and often in the mercy-rule victory. They scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to bust things open as Grayson Boreham had an RBI- double, Meinen an RBI-single and Rooney driving in three runs to cap the outburst.  

Stewart earned the win, allowing four hits and one run over three innings, with Ryan Hubbard appearing in relief. 

Overall on the young season, the Astros have an 18-2 record with an appearance lined up in the Chatham tournament July 24-26.
