Pitching, defence key 18U Astros' victory in Stratford tourney

It’s been almost a month, but the Mitchell Superior Sealers 18U OBA Astros are banking on their early July tournament victory in Stratford to be a harbinger of things to come.

In a few weeks, the Astros will compete in the mid-August Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) ‘C’ tournament in St. Thomas. So far,  the club sports an unofficial overall record of 14-2 but are nursing some injuries sustained thus far this season, head coach Chad Verberne noted.

But in the Stratford tournament, pitching, defence and timely hitting all factored into winning the title after posting five straight victories, Verberne said, including a 7-3 win over St. Marys in the championship game. 

A 16U call-up, Bryson Eickmeyer, was chosen as the MVP of the final after he pitched six-and-two-third innings, backed by a five-run outburst in the third inning. Eickmeyer helped his own cause with an RBI in the big inning, as did Logan Verberne and Landon Van Bakel. 

Mitchell opened the tournament with an 11-3 win over a 17U club from Barrie. Van Bakel picked up the pitching win and helped his cause offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Mitchell broke the game open with a seven-run third inning keyed by a two-run single by Ethan Jarmuth. Ray Wolfe, another 16U call-up, tripled, singled, walked and scored three runs in the win.

The next day, Ryan Klumper led the charge with a dominant pitching performance as the big righthander allowed just three hits and four walks while striking out nine in an 8-1 triumph over Kingston. Jarmuth went 3-for-3 and added three RBI, while Charlie Wolfe scored three runs from his lead-off spot in the batting order. Eickmeyer set the tone with an RBI-triple in the first inning. 

Later the same day, Ray Wolfe’s RBI-triple highlighted a three-run rally in the top of the fourth against their hosts. Andrew Davis and Matthew Menheere hit back-to-back singles to ignite a two-run fifth that added needed insurance as Stratford scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to draw close. 

Eickmeyer, Mitchell’s third pitcher of the day behind Verberne and Menheere, put out the fire to earn the save. Klumper completed the scoring with an RBI-double in the sixth in the 6-3 win. 

In the semifinal against London Tincaps on July 5, Charlie Wolfe pitched the complete game victory as the Astros jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a big uprising in the second keyed by Jarmuth’s two-run single. Van Bakel added a two-run double to cap a two-run fifth that was needed in an eventual 6-5 victory. 

Bad weather curtailed a tournament in St. Thomas July 17-19 weekend, with the Astros playing just one game, an 8-7 loss to Caledonia.
