Mitchell dropped just one of five games en route to the title while turning in some gems, including a no-hitter from lefty Jake Heinbuch in an 8-0 semifinal win against the host club. The Astros used that momentum to decisively win a 13-3 contest over the London Talons in the championship, a rematch with the same club that handed them their only loss one day earlier.

In the final, lead-off hitter Jarrett Van Bakel drove in four runs on two hits. including a three-run inside-the-park home run, to highlight a five-run third inning after a two-run single one inning earlier.
Ryan Hubbard earned the win on the mound, scattering nine hits and allowing three runs over four innings, striking out two and walking one. Sam Bolger pitched one inning of shutout ball in relief. Luke Murray and Van Bakel each had two hits, but the Astros also showed patience at the plate, collecting seven walks.
The Astros rallied from an early 7-2 deficit to beat Windsor 10-8 in their opening game of the tournament. The locals turned the game around in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs on six hits to take a 10-8 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was an RBI-double by Joel Meinen. Sam Bolger opened the game for Mitchell, surrendering three hits and six runs over two innings, with Hubbard and Kale Murray each appearing in relief. Van Bakel had three of Mitchell’s 10 hits for the game, while Kellen Russwurm collected two.

The London Talons turned aside the Astros 11-8 in their second game, building a 6-1 lead with a six-run second inning. This time, however, the Astros couldn’t fight all the way back, even after evening the contest in the third inning. Hunter Reid took the loss for Mitchell while Zach Rooney went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Later July 25, Mitchell rebounded in a big way with a 12-4 drubbing of Dorchester as Luke Murray drove in five runs — a three-run double in the seventh and a two-run single in the fifth. Mitchell jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning highlighted by Meinen’s two-run double and never looked back. Finn Stewart earned the win, allowing 10 hits and four runs (two earned) over seven innings while striking out three. A red-hot Van Bakel had four hits in five at-bats, leading the club which collected 13 for the game. Dawson Dietz and Rooney each had multiple hits, and Russwurm had two walks and stole two of the team’s four bases.
The next day, in the semifinal win over Chatham, Heinbuch was dominant with a no-hitter, busting the game open with a six-run sixth that included a crucial two-run double by Nole Musselman, an RBI-triple by Luke Murray and an RBI-single from Van Bakel, who led the team with two runs batted in.
The club would like to thank Stratford RV for their support in using its limo bus to commute back and forth all weekend instead of staying in hotels.
Overall, at press time, the Astros have a 29-8 record with a handful of games still to play before participating in the 12-team OBA ‘A’ championship tournament in London Aug. 7-9. Mitchell will open the tournament in St. Thomas at 11 a.m. on Aug. 7.
