U13 Elma Avengers capture OASA West title

The U13 Elma Avengers stamped their place atop the Ontario West Championship in Ponsonby over the July 10-12 weekend, stringing together a powerful blend of pitching, speed, and timely hitting across five games that showcased the depth and determination of the young squad.

Elma opened the tournament with authority, rolling past the Caledonia Mets 13–0 behind a flawless outing from Murray Bromley, who struck out nine in three no-hit innings and added four RBI at the plate, including an inside-the-park home run. The Avengers’ offense erupted for 11 runs across the third and fourth innings, setting an early tone of pressure and precision.

Their second contest, a tight 3–1 win over the Tara Twins Minor team, highlighted the Avengers’ ability to grind. Bromley delivered a masterful 14-strikeout complete game, keeping Elma within reach until the sixth inning, when Cooper Verkley tied the game with a sharp single and Gage Wicke followed with a decisive two-run triple. The Avengers’ defense remained perfect, committing no errors through two games. 

Sunday, July 12 began with adversity as Elma fell 6–1 to the Tara Major Twins. Despite 11 strikeouts from Bromley, the Avengers couldn’t overcome early scoring from Tara. The loss, however, sparked the team’s most dramatic response of the weekend.

Facing Embro and trailing 8–3 in the third inning, Elma mounted a stirring comeback to win 13–8. Wicke powered the rally with five RBI, including a three-run inside-the-park homer, while Brysen Brenneman went a perfect 4-for-4. Verkley battled first for Elma going 3.2 innings and Bromley coming in for relief with 2.1 shutout innings. The Avengers surged ahead with a five-run sixth inning punctuated by Bromley’s two-run double. 

With momentum restored, Elma closed the championship weekend in commanding fashion, defeating the Tara Major Twins 15–4. Brenneman drove in four runs, Hudson Smith collected four hits, and Bromley added a three-run double as the Avengers’ offense overwhelmed Tara with 15 hits and seven stolen bases. 

Across the tournament, the Avengers showcased elite pitching—Murray Bromley totaled 51 strikeouts—alongside explosive offense, disciplined at-bats, and airtight defense. Their ability to respond to pressure, erase deficits, and finish strong defined a championship performance that resonated well beyond the scoreboard. 

The U13 Elma Avengers are OASA West champions, and they earned it. They will advance to the OASA championships in Bracebridge on Aug. 7-9.
