Underdog U9 Hornets finish as Huron-Perth 'A' finalists

The underdog Mitchell U9 (Smith) Hornets finished as Huron-Perth ‘A’ runners-up after showing steady improvement and solid results in the eight-team fastball playoff tournament in Zurich over the Aug. 8-9 weekend.

The Hornets finished in the top eight of the league after regular season action and played three games on Aug. 8, recording two narrow wins and a hard-fought 15-15 deadlock with their colleagues from Mitchell (Rock).

Mitchell opened with a 16-11 win over Listowel (Adamson) bright and early, and then went toe-to-toe with their friends, the other Hornets, in a 15-15 tie. The Smith squad scored the maximum five runs in three of the four innings played while Rock did as well. 

Layla Ward, Tess Eckert and Evelyn Stacey each scored three runs for the Smith team, while Nora McKee scored three runs for Rock. Haven Rock, Rory Gammie and Emily Wagg each crossed the plate twice. 

Needing a win in their final round-robin game to advance to the semifinal, the Smith team recorded a 17-14 victory in their third game of the day, earning a trip back to Huron County for the semifinal with Wilmot the next day. 

Sensational defence was turned in by the Hornets, who scored the maximum five runs in the second and third innings to build a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in a 16-7 win. Devin Fuller and Stacey each scored three runs while Shaylyn Smith stroked a pair of doubles.

In the ‘A’ final against Exeter Blue, the Hornets ran out of gas in an 18-11 loss but fought hard to the end under the August heat. Lead-off hitter Ward scored two runs in the game, while Evelyn Bakewell and Stacey, along with Ella Rose, all scored twice. 

Team members included Layla Ward, Elaina Johns, Shaylyn Smith, Ella Rose, Evelyn Bakewell, Devin Fuller, Tess Eckert, Evelyn Stacey, Maeve Courtney, Presley Henderson, Maeve Walkom and Caroline Nater. Coaches were Vicki Smith, Brad Stacey, Emily Walt and Rylee Kipfer. 

The U9 Rock team went 1-1-1 overall in the event, not quite good enough to advance, losing a narrow 25-22 decision to Listowel (Lane) before rebounding from their tie to win their final game of the season, 20-18 over Listowel (Adamson). 

The U13 Hornets went 0-3 in the eight-team Huron-Perth ‘A’ playoff tournament in Cambridge Aug. 8-9. The team fell 10-4 to Listowel and 8-7 to Elma in their opening games, and then lost 16-7 to Cambridge the following day. 

The U15 (Ruby) Hornets went 1-2 in their ‘B’ tournament in Stratford, losing 13-6 to Clinton before rebounding to knock off Wilmot #1 11-8 immediately thereafter. A final 12-9 loss to Exeter knocked them out of advancing further. 

The U15 (Gloor) Hornets also went 1-2 in the ‘C’ tournament, losing 10-8 to Wilmot #2 before defeating Brussels 15-9 and falling 9-8 to Sweaburg. 

Both the U11 tournament, in Stratford, and the U17 tournament, in Norwich, were scheduled for Aug. 14-16, with details unavailable at press time.
