THERE ARE SOME TALL SIGHTS… in the “Star Wars” universe, with dramatic desert spires and distant alien mountains serving as statuesque backdrops to the action. Likewise, several cosmically cool characters, including a particularly winsome Wookiee who possesses the skills to co-pilot the Millennium Falcon, are also notably tall. But few wonders, either based on this planet or in some distant galaxy, are quite as tall as a redwood tree. It makes sense, then, that one of the biggest “Star Wars” gatherings on the California calendar takes place in and near the redwoods each spring, those tall and dramatic lifeforms that feel a little fictional but are very much of this planet. Prepare to set your ship’s coordinates for the Forest Moon Festival, a multi-day party created for Jedi, members of the Rebel Alliance, and any Earthling who is eager to explore some of the “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi” filming locations, those redwood-laden spots full of ferns and fantasy.
MAY 28-31… are the 2026 dates, and the schedule for the celebration, which is mainly centered around Eureka and Arcata in Northern California, is live. Events include complimentary screenings of “Return of the Jedi,” pop-up night markets, a Family Day at Sequoia Park (oh yeah, free inflatable lightsabers are one of the giveaways), a pancake breakfast, and more. If you’re truly feeling the Endor aura, you’ll find a few places to rock your Ewok outfit or looks inspired by Luke, Leah, or Chewbacca. And a panel in the redwoods featuring Kevin Thompson, who starred as an Ewok in the film, as well as “Star Wars” scholars will be a big draw, too, at the 2026 event. While there are a few Golden State destinations that can proudly wear their “a Star Wars film was made here” badge, the Forest Moon Festival shines a dappled green light on the redwood forests seen in the 1983 blockbuster and the verdant area’s enduring role in cinematic legacy of the series.
MAY MERRIMENT: The fifth month on the earthly calendar is synonymous with “May the Fourth,” the spirited occasion when “Star Wars” fans gather in places near and far, far away to honor the films. Note that the Forest Moon Festival is not taking place on May 4 but rather near the end of the month, giving you time to find your Jedi jamboree earlier in the month, if you wish. One place that will brim with Lucasian energy on May the Fourth? Downtown Modesto, the hometown of legendary “Star Wars” auteur George Lucas, where fans will gather for cosplay fun and Force-tastic activities.
