What to KnowAnnual Rhododendron ShowMendocino Coast Botanical GardensFort BraggMay 2 and 3, 2026The show is free, while garden admission will give visitors access to the pretty property beyond the rhodie area
SWING BY A HARDWARE STORE, and head to the paint aisle, and try to find every shade of brown, green, and gray that you can. You might come across “mossy kiss” and “bark splendor” and “foggy breeze” among the many hues, and if you put them all together? You’ll have just about every color found in a redwood forest, an ethereal place of rich tree browns and soft sky grays and deep fern greens. But sometimes, other surprising sights pop into vivacious view while you’re trekking through the tall trees: pinks and purples and magentas and corals capture our flower-obsessed attention. Rhododendrons are known to grow near the redwood trees, making them one of the fabulous floral marvels of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties. To honor these blossoms and their petal-pretty place in the redwoods ecosystem, there is the Annual Rhododendron Show at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
“OVER 800 ENTRIES”: The May 2 and 3 event is billed as “one of the largest of its kind,” with hundreds of entries on view and oodles of rhododendrons blooming in the garden and along woodland paths nearby. Admission to the juried show is free but consider purchasing a ticket to enter the garden for more invigorating exploring. This is a “peak bloom” time for the rhodies, so make plenty of time to bask in the beauty of the rhododendron world and all sorts of eye-catching azaleas. And if you’re eager to venture into the redwoods parks in search of rhododendrons in the wild, there are a number of hikes to explore, adventures that may feature flowers (check with National Park Service or California State Parks for tips). Save the Redwoods League has a roundup of some of the splendid bloomers you might encounter in the lush region, including rhodies, trillium, and lupine, too.
