PRETTY MUCH ANY ARTIST… would love to hear that a popular happening in their hometown grew out of something special they created decades ago. The works of filmmaker George Lucas, who was famously raised in Modesto, are regularly honored around the Central Valley town in a few memorable ways, including a galactic gathering that raises its lightsabers high in honor of May the Fourth, the May 4 “Star Wars”-centered holiday. But if your interest leans into classic autos that rock big fins and the cuffed-jean style of the mid-century, you’re looking to June and another Modesto celebration with cinematic origins: It’s the American Graffiti Festival and Car Show, a weekend-long celebration that is slow-rolling, with vroom and verve, into the city over the second weekend of June. Billed as the “largest event in Modesto’s annual Graffiti summer celebration,” the festival regularly attracts well over 1,000 vintage vehicles, including cars that reigned during 1962, the year when “American Graffiti” was set.
JUNE 12 THROUGH 14… are the 2026 dates, and the whole snazzy, souped-up shebang begins with a Friday night car parade through the heart of Modesto. The festival and car show will shine up the chrome June 13 and 14, so make like a real cool cat and trot by the MJC West Campus for all sorts of gleaming autos and live bands on stage; there is a Kid Zone, too, and food for sale. Good to know? Viewing the Friday parade is free, while spectators will pay a daily fee of ten bucks to attend the car show. And if you happen to be in town a week early? Swing by the State Theatre for an “American Graffiti” screening (but do get those tickets ahead of time). If you take a stroll before taking a seat for the 1973 film, you might saunter past some of Modesto’s famous murals, including large-scale works rocking Princess Leia and Darth Vader moxie.
