SPYING A VINTAGE VEHICLE… that’s coolly cruising near the water in a California beach town isn’t too hard; old-school convertibles and decked-out VW vans can be found festooning parking lots and coastal roads from San Diego to the Oregon border. But there are certain places that feel synonymous with a certain style of ocean-inspired living, and the woodsy wagons that complement time spent on a surfboard or hanging on the sand. Santa Cruz has been a Woodie wonderland for decades, and you don’t need to keep a lookout in the vicinity of the boardwalk area to behold these pretty paneled-covered beauties; you might find one while rolling through the nearby redwoods or the Santa Cruz Mountains. But to admire the most robust collection of Woodies in one spectacular spot, you’ll want to vroom for Santa Cruz Wharf on the final Saturday of June 2026.
THAT’S JUNE 27, a week before Fourth of July, and the 30th annual Woodies on the Wharf is the mondo meet-up; Santa Cruz Woodies and The City of Santa Cruz are presenting the event. No ticket is required to attend and entry is free, and hundreds of Woodies are expected; Santa Cruz Woodies merchandise will be for sale, too. Fans of Woodies will have a few happenings to look forward to starting June 25, with a wrap-up June 28. But if you’d like to view the big gathering and a parade, be at the wharf on June 27 at 3:30 p.m. for the send-off. Eager to soak in more waveside nostalgia while in town? Take a ride on the Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, another “woody” gem with vintage vibes to spare, then make time for Free Movies on the Beach at the old-timey attraction.
WOODIES AND WOOD WHARFS: Talk about an ideal pairing of Woodie theme and woodsy place: The sizable and stately wharf “… is the longest wooden structure of its kind on the West Coast,” shares Visit California. Check out more Santa Cruz love at this page now.
