THE LONGEST DAY OF THE YEAR? It can prompt a person to be a little outlandish, a bit quirky, and truly and fully engaged with the uplifting spirit of the moment. With this in merry mind, you might find people out picnicking or swimming or savoring a sunset on June 21, or participating in another playful activity that speaks to the occasion’s ethereal and upbeat character. In Santa Barbara, that ethereal approach involves lively large-scale inflatables, performers on stilts, festive floats, and costumes brimming with feathery touches and shiny sequins. It’s the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade and Festival and it will kick up its happy heels along a stretch of Santa Barbara Street on June 20.
“WAVE”… is the refreshing 2026 theme, which means you might encounter floats, dance teams, and bands embracing an oceanic vibe or creating a sinuous wave of movement. Movement and color can be seen everywhere: Opulent headdresses, painted masks, and a rollicking carnival-like air adds to the parade’s gleeful glamour. It’s a showy and splendid procession that can trace its glittery origins back to the mid-70s; over 50 years later, the parade has become one of the country’s stand-out summer solstice celebrations, and certainly one of the biggest on the West Coast. Want to be at the kick-off? Dance your way over to Alameda Park on June 19 for the 4 p.m. launch of the lighthearted, full-of-light, light-as-air lark. There are events shimmying from June 19 through 21, with the parade set to roll at noon on June 20.
