Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via REUTERS Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Monday that Tehran was not seeking to resume negotiations with the United States.Baghaei added that Tehran was not currently engaged in direct talks with Washington and remained in control of the Strait of Hormuz.His remarks came after a Trump administration official told Al-Monitor on Saturday that the United States was pausing its strikes on Iran as US officials saw a potential opening for negotiations. US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz confirmed the pause on Sunday, saying it was intended to give diplomacy more time.A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Sunday that Tehran would also halt its attacks as long as Washington refrained from carrying out further strikes.The tentative de-escalation follows 12 consecutive days of US attacks on Iranian military targets around the Strait of Hormuz.Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet Trump on Tuesday to discuss the Iran war and efforts to halt fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. REUTERS/Umit Bektas/File Photo Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Damascus was seeking to avoid confrontation with Israel while pursuing a security arrangement aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further conflict. “We are avoiding getting into confrontations,” Sharaa told Al Jazeera. He added that a security agreement, if reached and respected by Israel, could pave the way for broader peace talks without compromising Syria’s claim to the Israel-occupied Golan Heights. His remarks came as Syria’s state-run SANA news agency reported fresh Israeli military incursion in the western Daraa countryside. REUTERS/File Photo Ship traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait fell sharply on Sunday after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis attacked Saudi oil facilities, Reuters reported Monday, citing shipping data from Kpler. Only 11 commodity vessels including seven oil tankers crossed the strait, the lowest figure in months, Reuters reported. The Iran-linked Houthis control much of northern Yemen and have fought a Saudi-led coalition since 2015. Although direct fighting between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia has eased in recent years, the latest attacks threaten to reopen that front and further destabilize one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz also remained low despite a pause in US-Iran strikes, with fewer than 10 commodity vessels transiting daily over the weekend. Salem, who is also minister of international cooperation, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan are expected to discuss the bilateral ties as well as the political and economic situation in Sudan amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country triggered by the civil war. Sudan’s civil war pits the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti. The former allies fell out over control of the government and fighting between the two sides has been ongoing since April 2023. Turkey backs Burhan’s authority in Port Sudan while calling for an end to the fighting, humanitarian access and a political settlement that preserves Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity.
