Iran’s Bagheri: No deal on Hormuz yet
Welcome back to the Daily Briefing. This is Ezgi Akin, filling in for Gabrielle. In today’s edition:Iran’s Bagheri says no deal on Hormuz yetIsrael ramps up Lebanon attacks ahead of US talksHamas’ new Gaza military chief killedGulf celebrates Eid al-Adha despite warThousands rally for Turkey’s ousted opposition leader Thanks for reading, Ezgi (ezgi_akin)Iran’s Bagheri says no deal on Hormuz yetA drone view shows vessels sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, as seen from Musandam, Oman, May 25, 2026. REUTERS/StringerIranian and US negotiators have not yet reached a deal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council deputy secretary said on Wednesday.“Until we agree on all the issues, we consider that we have agreed on nothing,” Ali Bagheri was quoted as telling reporters on the sidelines of a security summit in Moscow, according to Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency. His remarks came as both US and Iranian officials played down hopes for an imminent agreement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that negotiations could “take a few days,” while President Donald Trump said he was in no hurry to strike a deal. The emerging memorandum of understanding is expected to call for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire reached last month, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. But major obstacles remain, including Iran’s near-weapons-grade uranium stockpile, sanctions relief, frozen Iranian assets in Qatar and Israeli pressure on Hezbollah in Lebanon. Elizabeth Hagedorn reports from Washington. Israel ramps up Lebanon attacks ahead of US talksIsrael said it was stepping up its attacks on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon — Abbas FakihDelegations from Lebanon and Israel are scheduled to meet at the Pentagon Friday for another round of US-brokered talks, even as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalates. Israeli forces carried out strikes near Lebanon’s Qaraoun dam on Tuesday, Lebanese authorities and local media said.At least 31 people were killed in the latest attacks, Lebanon's Health Ministry said on Wednesday. Lebanon’s Litani River Authority warned that any direct or indirect targeting of the dam or its facilities could pose “catastrophic risks,” given the reservoir’s importance to the country’s water security. The escalation comes despite a US-brokered ceasefire that began in April and was extended on May 15. Adam Lucente has details.Israel says it killed Hamas' new armed wing chief in GazaA Palestinian man inspects the site of an Israeli airstrike on a residential building on Tuesday, in Gaza City, May 27, 2026. REUTERS/Mahmoud IsaaThe Israeli military said on Wednesday it had killed Mohammad Odeh, Hamas’ newly appointed armed wing chief in Gaza, days after killing his predecessor. The Israeli military said Odeh was killed on Tuesday as its operations intensified across Gaza. A relative confirmed his death to Reuters and said his wife and son were also killed. Gaza health officials said six other people were killed in the strike, which hit an apartment building in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Odeh had headed Hamas’ intelligence division during the Oct. 7 attacks on the country and had replaced Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who was killed by Israel on May 15. The strike comes as Israel and Hamas remain deadlocked over the next phase of their ceasefire deal.Gulf celebrates Eid al-Adha under shadow of warMuslim worshippers walk along the Grand Mosque complex in the holy city of Mecca on May 22, 2026, ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. — Zain JAAFAR / AFP via Getty ImagesEid al-Adha festivities are beginning across the Gulf this week amid the conflict and airports are bracing for heavy congestion and hotels report strong bookings as millions travel despite months of disruption linked to the US-Israel-Iran war. The holiday marks a rarity as the Gulf countries, which have been heavily targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks since February, are observing one of Islam’s holiest celebrations during a major regional conflict. Yet governments and businesses are pressing ahead with public celebrations, tourism campaigns and holiday programming in a bid to project stability. Saudi Arabia said around 1.51 million pilgrims had arrived from abroad for the Hajj, surpassing last year’s figure, while UAE air carriers Emirates and Etihad warned passengers to expect long lines at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports. Jack Dutton has details. In Turkey, thousands defy police to rally for ousted CHP leader OzelTurkish riot police use water cannons to disperse protesters during a rally for ousted opposition leader Ozgur Ozel, days after a court removed him from office, in Izmir on May 26, 2026. — Ramazan Yerlikaya / AFP via Getty ImagesTens of thousands of Republican People’s Party (CHP) supporters rallied in Izmir on Tuesday behind ousted opposition leader Ozgur Ozel, turning the party's leadership crisis into a mass protest against what they described as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s attempt to cripple Turkey’s main opposition. The rally came days after an Ankara court annulled the CHP’s 2023 leadership vote and ordered the return of former party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who lost multiple national elections to Erdogan before being replaced by Ozel. Addressing the crowd, Ozel cast the ruling as political intervention rather than an internal party dispute, saying Erdogan was “staging a coup against the CHP” to avoid “handing over power.” Read our dispatch from Ankara.
