SAUL LOEB / AFP via Getty ImagesUS President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would lift sanctions imposed on Turkey under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act and make a decision on potential F-35 sales to the country.“We're going to be taking the sanctions off,” Trump told reporters during the on-camera portion of his bilateral talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. “We don’t want to sanction friends. It’s very simple,” he added.Trump arrived in Ankara earlier Tuesday to attend a two-day NATO summit. Departing from established protocol, Erdogan welcomed the US president at the airport himself. The two leaders then held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit before joining NATO leaders for dinner.Washington imposed CAATSA sanctions on Turkey in December 2020 over Ankara’s acquisition of Russia’s S-400 air defense systems. Turkey also was ousted from the international consortium manufacturing the F-35s as well as was blocked from acquiring the fighter jets.Speaking next to Erdogan on Tuesday, Trump said he would also consider selling F-35 jets to Turkey.Despite Trump’s announcement the Trump administration will need US Congress approval for the removal of CAATSA sanctions.Listen to a breakdown of the top headlines on today’s episode of the Middle East Minute podcast with Adam Lucente.Bomb attacks wound 18 in Damascus as Macron visitsThe French president, the first Western European leader to visit Syria since the fall of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in 2024, will continue his trip, France's Elysee Palace says — Ludovic MARINTwo explosions struck near Damascus’ Four Seasons Hotel on Tuesday during French President Emmanuel Macron’s landmark visit to Syria, wounding at least 18 people, including four police officers. Macron had already left the hotel for talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and was not harmed. Syria’s Interior Ministry said the bombs were planted in a parked car and a garbage container and exploded as security forces were preparing to dismantle them. The attack marked the second deadly security incident in Damascus in less than a week. Macron said he will continue his trip as planned after the attack. “Nothing can smother the aspiration of Syrian women and men to live in a fully sovereign, safe, pluralistic, and united Syria,” he wrote on X. Macron is the first European Union leader to visit Syria since the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024. Two tankers hit in HormuzOil tankers and cargo vessels are anchored off the coast of Oman after being stranded for days as congestion at Port Sultan Qaboos prevented them from docking on June 23, 2026, in Muscat, Oman. — Elke Scholiers/Getty ImagesTwo tankers were hit in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, reviving fears over Gulf shipping despite last month’s interim US-Iran peace deal. The Qatari LNG tanker Al Rekayyat reported a drone strike that set its engine room on fire and left it disabled, while maritime security sources said a Saudi crude tanker was also damaged. No party claimed responsibility. The incidents came as Iran warned that final peace talks would not begin unless Trump stopped threatening to restart the war. Axios reported on Tuesday that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at least two missiles at commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night, citing two US officials.Russia’s Rosatom says staff to return to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plantA picture taken on Nov. 10, 2019, shows workers on the construction site of a second reactor in Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, during an official ceremony to kick-start the works at the facility. — ATTA KENARE/AFP via Getty ImagesRussia’s state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, said Monday that Russian specialists are expected to return to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant starting in mid-July after hundreds were evacuated during the US-Israel-Iran war. Rosatom chief Alexei Likhachev said the situation at the plant was now “calm,” but warned that work on Bushehr’s second and third reactors could not be completed without Russian involvement. Rosatom evacuated around 600 workers after a projectile hit the facility’s premises in March, though no damage or casualties were reported. The announcement underscores Moscow’s continued commitment to Iran’s nuclear energy program despite the war and comes as Tehran and Washington remain in talks over Iran’s nuclear program and Strait of Hormuz navigation. Adam Lucente has details.
