CLEAVING TO THE CLOVE: A variety of foods have inspired a big bounty of memes and oft-repeated internet sayings, but the garlic clove might be at the top of the “measure with your heart” list that is regularly shared, and updated, online. Any garlic lover instantly understands this: When a recipe calls for two cloves, will you go with three? Four? Home cooks who are big on the bulb often press on, literally, when it comes to adding the produce section’s spikiest star to a dish. But it isn’t simply about cooking at home with garlic for serious mavens: Fans of the feisty favorite often swing through Gilroy, a town that has long been synonymous with garlic, to make their delectable dreams real. And if you’ve ever dreamt of sitting inside an oversized garlic bulb while it takes a few giggle-inducing turns, be cheered: The Garlic Twirl is a longtime favorite at Gilroy Gardens, which will be open on National Garlic Day.
THAT’S APRIL 19, as clove lovers surely know, and the charming theme park will hold its “first-ever” National Garlic Day celebration in 2026. The park is partnering with Christopher Ranch on the celebration with a few foodie giveaways in store, including garlic bread. Foods available for purchase will be a snacky centerpiece of the celebratory day, with Garlic Cheese Curds with Garlic Aioli Dipping Sauce on the menu, and Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings adding zest, too. A children’s book giveaway is on the schedule — “Elephant Garlic” by Ken Christopher will be in the spotlight — and the Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant will be part of the revelries, too. And so nice? Gilroy residents will be treated to a $12 ticket, a discount. “Gilroy is the Garlic Capital of the World — and we’re excited to extend this special offer for residents to come out and join our first-ever National Garlic Day celebration with their fellow Gilroyans!” shared Hoa Minh Le, President and General Manager of Gilroy Gardens.
SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS: If you can’t be there April 19, but you still want to step inside one of the cute bulbs of the Garlic Twirl, the family-sweet theme park is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 o’clock (summer hours may change). Be sure to make time to admire the destination’s famous Circus Trees, the spectacular specimens grown and shaped by Swedish immigrant Axel Erlandson starting a century ago in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The trees found a new home at Gilroy Garlics, where they continue to wow visitors with their magnificent and fanciful forms.
