Cheverus/Waynflete becomes the fourth team to hold the No. 1 ranking in the Varsity Maine volleyball poll, and their ascension to that spot marks the third change at the top in the past four weeks. The Stags, who were second last week, finished the regular season on a nine-game winning streak and will be the top seed in the Class A postseason, which begins Thursday.
Washington Academy and Greely, Class B’s top two seeds, move up from third and fourth to a tie for second place. The Rangers had a strong week, defeating No. 7 York, No. 8 Gardiner, and Lewiston/Lisbon.
As we noted here a few weeks ago, the top teams keep beating each other this year, and just when a team appears to have solidified its standing, another strong team comes around and beats them. There was more of that over the past week. Along with Greely’s big wins, Thornton Academy, last week’s No. 1 and the only team to beat Cheverus/Waynflete this season, fell to Gorham and Scarborough.
The volleyball playoffs are going to be fun. Each of the four regions seems to have at least three teams with legitimate chances to win the state title.
Here are the No. 1 seeds: Cheverus/Waynflete (Class A), Greely (B), Gardiner (C) and George Stevens Academy (D).
The Varsity Maine volleyball poll is based on games played through Tuesday, Oct. 20. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
1. Cheverus/Waynflete (6) 87
2. Washington Academy (2) 77
2. Greely (1) 77

5. Thornton Academy 53
6. Scarborough 41
7. York 37
8. Gardiner 17
