Lewiston or Brunswick has occupied the top spot in the Varsity Maine poll for the past six weeks. They’ve been ranked first and second for five straight weeks. For the second week in a row, the Blue Devils are No. 1 and the Dragons No. 2.
Though they’ve established themselves as the clear favorites, the Class A North tournament will be a dogfight. Eight-ranked Edward Little is the region’s third seed, and the Red Eddies’ four losses in the regular season were to Lewiston and Brunswick. (Earning the top seed might be beneficial to the Blue Devils because Edward Little has played them much closer than it has Brunswick, including Tuesday’s 1-0 Lewiston victory over the Eddies in the latest edition of the rivalry). Camden Hills, the fourth seed, has played tight games against the Lewiston and Edward Little this fall.
Class A South has no clear favorite. Thornton Academy, ranked third for the third week in a row, nabbed the top seed, but the region’s top six teams appear capable of winning A South and state titles. Reigning Class A champion Scarborough is the second seed. Gorham and South Portland are the third and fourth seeds. The Red Riots had a strong finish to the regular season, including wins over Gorham and Deering, which was ranked fourth last week. Deering, the fifth seed, dropped its final two games but has been one of the state’s top teams all season, and sixth-seeded Portland dealt Thornton its only loss on Friday.
Yarmouth and Fryeburg Academy represent B South in the top-10, but Greely’s a team to watch.
The Varsity Maine boys soccer poll is based on games played through Tuesday, Oct. 20. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
