Camden Hills retains the No. 1 ranking in the Varsity Maine girls soccer poll for the fifth consecutive week, and Scarborough is No. 2 for the fifth week in a row. Both teams take the top seeds into their regional tournaments — Class A North for the Windjammers and A South for the Red Storm.
For those two teams to meet up in the Class A final, they’ll need to pass a few challenges. Especially Scarborough, which will have to be the last team standing in a region that features four teams ranked in the Varsity Maine top-10. That includes Kennebunk, which was unranked last week but jumped to fifth. The Rams wrapped up the regular season with a big 2-1 win over No. 6 Windham.
Camden Hills will need to win its quarterfinal and semifinal (which could be against two-time defending state champion Bangor) and then likely get past either No. 10 Mt. Ararat or Brunswick in the A North final.
Class B South features three ranked teams: Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth and Poland. Those teams need to watch out for Greely, which beat the Clippers 1-0 in the regular-season finale and played the Capers and the Knights to draws this season.
Eighth-ranked John Bapst, the top seed in B North will be challenged by Gardiner, Presque Isle, Hermon and Belfast.
The Varsity Maine girls soccer poll is based on games played through Tuesday, Oct. 20. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
1. Camden Hills (9) 90
