As has been the case all season, Cheverus is the unanimous No. 1 team in the Varsity Maine field hockey poll. The Stags are undefeated (14-0) and take the top seed into the Class A South tournament. And they have won the past three state championships.

A fourth straight title won’t be easy. To win their region, the Stags will have to get past the likes of third-ranked Biddeford and Sanford/Kennebunk, who have each played Cheverus twice this season, and the Stags won all four matchups by only one goal. No. 8 Thornton Academy should also be in the mix.

Then there’s A North, which is topped by another unbeaten, second-ranked Mt. Ararat, and the Stags’ usual state title game foe, No. 4 Skowhegan. The Eagles and the River Hawks also have to survive ninth-ranked Camden Hills, which took Mt. Ararat to overtime on Tuesday.

The B North and B South tournaments could be even more chaotic. Nokomis, which moved up from eighth last week to No. 7, is B North’s top seed, but the Warriors might have to face two-time reigning state champion Belfast in the semifinals. Fifth-ranked Leavitt beat the top contenders in the region but finished a distant second to Nokomis. That means the Hornets will have a tough second-round matchup with third-seeded Cony or sixth-seeded Gardiner, which has shown itself to be more than capable of winning the region.

Sixth-ranked Yarmouth is B South’s No. 1, but Freeport, which rejoins the poll at No. 10, dealt the Clippers their first loss of the season on Monday. Those two squads also need to be wary of third-seeded Greely.

The Varsity Maine field hockey poll is based on games played through Tuesday, Oct. 20. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.

1. Cheverus (9) 90
2. Mt. Ararat 78
3. Biddeford 73
4. Skowhegan 65
5. Leavitt 43
6. Yarmouth 42
7. Nokomis 32
8. Thornton Academy 16
9. Camden Hills 15
10. Freeport 12

Others receiving votes: Foxcroft Academy 10, Sanford/Kennebunk 8, Greely 6, Winthrop/Maranacook 4, Cony 1.
