For the first time this fall, we’re going to have a No. 1-vs.-No. 2 matchup. The reason it took until the eighth week of the season is that Thornton Academy has been No. 1 and Bonny Eagle has been No. 2 in every Varsity Maine 11-man football poll up to this point. The Golden Trojans and the Scots face off Saturday in Saco.

Oxford Hills made a big jump — from seventh last week to fourth this week — after its 29-0 win over Portland, which also gave the Vikings the inside track to the top seed in Class A North. Leavitt also joins the top 5 and has one of its biggest tests of the season on Friday, on the road against Hermon. Cony, like Oxford Hills, moved up three spots to seventh.

Greely is back in the 11-man rankings for the first time since the fall’s first poll after beating Hermon. Gray-New Gloucester joins the eight-man poll for the first time this season. The Patriots have won five straight games since their season-opening loss to Cape Elizabeth.

The Varsity Maine football polls are based on Week 7 games played through Oct. 17. The top 10 11-man and top 5 eight-man teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
