What is a voter to do? On Sept. 29, Brunswick eked past Lewiston 3-2 and last week became the unanimous No. 1 in the Varsity Maine boys soccer poll, a week after the Dragons took over the top spot by one point over the Blue Devils. Easy enough. But then last Thursday, Lewiston turned the tables with a 1-0 overtime win over Brunswick.
The teams split their two matches. Both teams have scored three goals in those two games. How do you split that difference? Most Varsity Maine voters appear to have gone with the “latest is the greatest” approach, giving the top spot back to the Blue Devils after they were ranked second the previous two weeks following two weeks at No. 1.
Lewiston still has a matchup with rival and ninth-ranked Edward Little on its schedule. Brunswick, which earned its second five-goal victory over the Red Eddies on Saturday (winning 7-2), has three games against Class A North playoff contenders: Mt. Blue, Messalonskee and Mt. Ararat.
Behind the Blue Devils and the Dragons in the poll are four Class A South squads, who are also the top four teams in their region, in the same order: Thornton Academy, Deering, Gorham and Scarborough. Those four teams don’t play each other in the final week of the regular season, but Portland, the fifth-place team in A South, has a chance to play spoiler with games against Thornton and Scarborough.
Fryeburg is back in the rankings at No. 10, the same spot they held in the Sept. 22 poll.
The Varsity Maine boys soccer poll is based on games played before Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
1. Lewiston (7) 88
2. Brunswick (2) 83
3. Thornton Academy 71
4. Deering 54
5. Gorham 49
6. Scarborough 32
7. Yarmouth 31
8. John Bapst 29
9. Edward Little 25
10. Fryeburg Academy 9
Others receiving votes: Hall-Dale 7, Foxcroft Academy 6, Monmouth Academy 5, Camden Hills 4, Portland 1, Greely 1.
