Memorial grows for Bridgeport officer after fatal crash

Дата публикации: 15-07-2026 21:29:48

Bridgeport police officers and community members are remembering Officer Cooper Whiteside after he was killed in an off-duty motorcycle crash in Danbury.
Whiteside died Monday when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle. A mother of three who was riding with him also died.
Outside Bridgeport Police Department headquarters, Whiteside’s police cruiser has been turned into a memorial, surrounded by balloons and flowers. Friends, fellow officers and community members have been leaving messages of condolence and support to honor his life and service.
Whiteside was about a week away from marking two years with the Bridgeport Police Department. Before becoming a police officer, he served with the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department.
A video shared by the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department shows a solemn procession transporting Whiteside’s body from Danbury to a funeral home.
“Cooper was the kind of person who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Kind, calm, and genuinely outgoing, he had a way of making people feel welcome and valued. His untimely passing is a tremendous loss to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” Brookfield Fire Chief Derek Broadmeyer said in a statement.
Those who worked alongside Whiteside said he made a lasting impact on the department.
“Cooper was one of those people who loved this job,” Sgt. Joseph Pires said.
Pires said Whiteside’s positive attitude stood out from the beginning.
“Cooper Whiteside was a ray of sunshine to the people around him,” Pires said.
Fellow officers said his loss has left a void within the department.
“You just hope that somebody else with that same spark comes along and can maybe fill that void,” Pires said.
As people continued signing the memorial outside police headquarters, officers said the outpouring of support reflects the kind of person Whiteside was.
“It shows how profound of a person he was and how irreplaceable he was and he was just that one of a kind,” Sgt. Erica Spika said.
Bridgeport police said they are staying in close contact with Whiteside’s family and are supporting them in any way they can while honoring his legacy.
Assistant Police Chief Frank Capozzi said plans are underway for a future motorcycle ride in Whiteside’s memory.
“There’s plans in the works for a motorcycle ride because besides being a cop, his second love was riding motorcycles,” Capozzi said.
Pires said Whiteside’s family should take pride in the life he lived.
“They should be proud of the man that he was, and it’s a loss for everybody that he’s gone now,” Pires said.
