Bridgeport police said the death of a woman who was found in a burned car Thursday morning was ruled a suicide.
Officials said that the police department received numerous 911 calls around 11 a.m. reporting a car on fire at the entrance to Elton Rogers Woodland Park on Frenchtown Road. The location was in the north end of the city near the border with Trumbull.
When first responders got to the scene, firefighters found a body burned “beyond recognition” in the driver’s seat, according to officials.
Police, along with detectives from the homicide and major crimes unit, got to the scene a short time later, along with officials from the Office of the State’s Attorney.
According to police, the car was registered to an address in Trumbull, and Bridgeport detectives interviewed residents who lived there. Investigators learned a tentative name for the person found in the car and worked with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) to confirm the identity.
On Friday, officials said that the OCME performed an autopsy and determined the manner of death was thermal injuries. The medical examiner also determined through dental records that the woman was a 59-year-old mother who lived at the same Trumbull address that the car was registered to, according to police.
Officials said there was no danger to the public as investigators believed it to be a suicide, with the OCME findings confirming.
“We made significant progress in this investigation on Thursday,” stated Detective Jeffrey Holtz, a spokesman for the Bridgeport Police and a member of the Homicide Unit. “We are well on the way to determining what happened. We will release additional details when we can. We ask the public to keep the family in their thoughts.”
