Funeral services held for longtime Connecticut DOT worker killed on I-95

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered Friday morning to remember a longtime Connecticut Department of Transportation worker who was struck and killed while working along Interstate 95 in Fairfield last Friday.
Funeral services for 60-year-old Elvin Hernandez of Bridgeport began at 10 a.m. today at Luz de Paz Funeral Home in Bridgeport. A procession from the funeral home to the cemetery will follow.
Hernandez worked for the DOT for 16 years and was based primarily out of the agency’s Stratford garage. Flags are flying at half-staff across Connecticut in his honor.
Hernandez was picking up debris along I-95 South near Exit 20 last Friday morning when state police said 60-year-old Edward Myers, of Derby, drove onto the grassy right shoulder and struck him. Hernandez was taken to the hospital, where he died.
According to state police, Myers admitted to using heroin before the crash, and troopers found cocaine in his jacket pocket. Investigators said he was also driving without a required ignition interlock device following an OUI conviction earlier this year.
Myers faces several charges, including second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle.
At Myers’ arraignment Monday, DOT workers packed the courtroom in a show of support for Hernandez’s family. Myers is being held on $2 million bond and is due back in court on Oct. 22.
