A Bridgeport man is in custody after he exchanged gunfire with police while barricaded, officials said.
Bridgeport officers were called to Grand Street just after midnight Wednesday on the report of a street fight. When the first officer got to the scene, they encountered 53-year-old Roberto Martins.
According to officials, Martins fled into the side basement door of a nearby house and fired a gun four times at officers through the door. One of the responding officers returned fire. Police said no one was struck by a bullet.
Bridgeport police’s hostage negotiation unit arrived with SWAT, and Martins was eventually talked into surrendering, coming out of the basement unarmed. Police said two guns were recovered by police.
Two officers underwent a health evaluation after the incident, officials said.
Martins was charged with attempted murder, attempted assault on a police officer, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal discharge of a firearm.
Martins was held on a $2 million bond. Bridgeport officials said Martins also had a non-extraditable warrant for burglary out of Philadelphia and is a noncitizen, targeted for removal from the country back in 2005.
The Office of the Inspector General is investigating the incident since Bridgeport police fired their weapon.
