Inspector general says Bridgeport officer tried to use Taser before man shot at police through door
Дата публикации: 04-09-2026 12:24:33
New details released by the Office of Inspector General show a Bridgeport police officer tried to use a Taser on a man before authorities say the man fired several shots through a door at officers, prompting another officer to return fire.
Bridgeport police officers were called to Grand Street shortly after midnight on Wednesday for a report of a fight in the street. Officers tried to speak with 53-year-old Robert Martins, who then ran through a side door of a three-family home at 609 Grand Street, according to the inspector general.
Officer Christopher Robinson tried to use a Taser on Martins as Robinson and another officer attempted to detain him, but the Taser deployment was unsuccessful. Martins then fired several shots through the side door at the officers, according to the report.
Neither Martins nor the officers were hit by gunfire, the report said.
Bridgeport police activated the department’s SWAT unit, and a crisis negotiator eventually persuaded Martins to leave the home and surrender without further gunfire. At least two firearms were seized from the residence, according to the report.
Martins was charged with attempted murder, attempted assault on a police officer, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal discharge of a firearm. He is being held on a $2 million bond.
Bridgeport officials said Martins also had a non-extraditable warrant for burglary out of Philadelphia and is a noncitizen, targeted for removal from the country back in 2005.
The inspector general also released body camera footage from the incident on Friday.
