Renumber designators can corrupt an Electronics design to a state that it is unrepairable

Hello, I wanted to share a recent issue I experienced with the Renumber Designators feature. My board contains a few ARUCO markers for a camera vision system, each with a footprint with no pads, so I did not create a schematic symbol. This may have been a mistake on my part, but there was no warning about it. When I ran Renumber Designators to tidy up the PCB before manufacturing, Fusion crashed. After restarting, I found that the components in the schematic had been renumbered, while those on the board had not, resulting in a “board and schematic not consistent” ERC error. I spent a couple of hours trying to fix this manually. It appeared that some schematic components had become associated with the ARUCO marker footprints, which somehow prevented me from changing their names. When I attempted to rename a component, no error message appeared, but the name remained unchanged. Fortunately, I had a backup, so I only lost a couple of hours of work. Without that backup, I suspect I would have had to redraw the board from scratch.
