For years, Keith Kunze held onto one goal: someday, somehow, he’d get his Corvette back.

He’d owned one once—before deployments, before kids, before life forced him to trade horsepower for practicality. After returning from Afghanistan, the Army veteran finally gave himself permission to chase that dream again. And on his birthday, he found it: a black on black 2017 Corvette, manual transmission, removable top, everything he’d ever wanted.

“This car was exactly what I wanted,” Kunze said. “Black inside, black outside, black rims.”

Perfect.

For a while, it was. The car looked showroom fresh in the photos he proudly shared with ABC8News. But today, the Corvette sits under a tarp in his Glen Allen parking lot in Henrico County, Virginia, nearly unrecognizable after a theft that still doesn’t feel real.

On Oct. 19, 2025, Kunze walked out of his apartment expecting to see his Corvette in its usual spot. Instead, there was an empty space.

“I was sure it was somewhere in here. So I just started kind of doing loops in the community, like, oh, I must have parked it in a weird spot,” Kunze said.

Henrico Police later confirmed the car had been stolen from the 4000 block of Gaelic Lane. Hours after the theft, Richmond Police located it abandoned in Scott’s Addition along West Marshall Street.

What Kunze found when he arrived was devastating.

The Corvette had been egged, spray painted, and stripped. The roof was missing. The headlights and tires were damaged. The interior had been trashed.

“I’m still having a hard time, like, wrapping my head around it because it’s … so much damage,” Kunze said.

Nearby surveillance video captured two masked individuals walking away from the abandoned car. Police are now investigating whether the Corvette was used in other crimes before it was dumped.

For Kunze, the aftermath has been slow and painful. The car has sat under a tarp for more than three months while he tries to figure out how to repair it. The estimated cost—around $20,000—isn’t covered by his insurance.

Henrico Police say the case remains open. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 804 501 4800.

For now, Kunze keeps the Corvette close, under a tarp to hide the damage. It’s still his dream car—just one he’s fighting to restore all over again.
