Fans of Love Island were recently left baffled after the show's broadcaster seemed to accidentally air an incorrect promo graphic on TV.
Viewers have been tuning in to ITV's hit reality dating series over the last six weeks. They've been left hooked thanks to several twists and turns as well as unexpected dramatic moments.
Now in its 13th season of the UK version, it celebrated this with some series firsts. This included the time of day the Islanders moved into the villa and introducing two bombshells almost immediately.
There've been plenty more shock arrivals, as well as brutal exits and complicated love triangles. Host Maya Jama has returned for presenting duties in between attending World Cup matches in the USA, and all the action has been debated by three ex-Islanders from the previous series in a new spin-off vodcast called The Debrief.
However, as viewers settled in to watch the most recent episode, which aired last night (Monday, July 13) some casual fans may have been confused to what they were really in for. As is usually the case for most major broadcast channels, the latest instalment of Love Island was introduced by a continuity announcer.
Introducing the show, the voiceover said: “The World Cup is all about finding the perfect match, and so is this, just with more flirting.
“With strong language and adult content, forget the golden boot, we’re chasing the ideal partnership now on ITV2, it’s brand new Love Island.”
However, what was shown on screen was not Love Island related. Instead, viewers were treated to a graphic ident that included the CITV logo.
CITV stood for Children's ITV and began as a late afternoon programming block on the ITV network. It eventually became its own channel in 2006 available on Freeview, often airing repeats.
From 2023, its shows became available via the broadcaster's streaming service as ITVX Kids. Meanwhile, a block of its programming would air on ITV2, the same channel as Love Island, in early mornings.
This ended earlier this year with CITV completely shut down. A 24/7 live stream for kids content can still be found on ITVX.
CITV was known for popular shows including Art Attack, Jungle Run and My Parents Are Aliens to name a few. Understandably, Love Island fans were confused at the mix up of seemingly advertising a brand aimed at a younger audience just before the reality series.
Many quickly took to social media to react to the incident. One posted: "Did ITV mean to advertise CITV before Love Island?"
Another admitted: "As a TV nerd I cannot explain the excitement I just felt at ITV2 accidentally using the CITV ident before Love Island like that. Sooooo hilarious."
Someone else asked: "Why did it say CITV? Girl this is definitely not a kids programme." And one person commented: "What do you mean ITV2 just used a CITV ident to go into Love Island."
Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
