A ‘Halfway to Halloween' market is taking form at the Winchester Mystery House

MAY ISN’T PARTICULARLY MONSTROUS, not in terms of groaning ghouls and glowering vampires. True, some gray days may descend during the foggy-ish fifth month, if you’re near the coast, but, on the whole, spring is in full and flowery swing when May begins. And… yet? Cue the elegantly ominous music: The growing-in-stature celebration known as “Halfway to Halloween” haunts the first days of May, with all sorts of spectral and spooky goings-on popping up at various attractions, museums, and businesses. One of the best-known of the eerie destinations has made a recent tradition of marking the point when Halloween is just six or so months away, and those frightful fun times will continue over a few select evenings in early May. It’s the Winchester Mystery House, which is bringing back its popular Flashlight Tours on May 1, 2, 8, and 9.
FLICKER FLICKER: It’s an atmospheric experience, for sure, and roaming the low-lit hallways of Sarah Winchester’s capacious manse is a bucket list adventure for plenty of Halloween lovers. But if you’re looking for a daytime expression of the Halfway-to-Halloween aura, make for Spirit Alley, a four-day market full of macabre and mirthful finds. It’s gracing the fabled property May 2, 3, 9, and 10 and a host of vendors will be there with candles and greeting cards and wearables and Halloween-inspired goodies. Admission is free, but do RSVP, and note that house tours are a separate ticket. You can do both Spirit Alley and the Flashlight Tours but be sure to purchase your evening admission in addition to your market RSVP.
IT’S TRUE… that the Winchester Mystery House is synonymous with Friday the 13ths, but fans can also anticipate otherworldly offerings when late April or early May rolls around each year, that celebratory six-months-to-Halloween stretch.
