Report reveals how much poor road conditions are costing San Diegans annually

Дата публикации: 21-06-2026 23:12:40

Ask just about any driver in San Diego, and they’ll have a story about the roads.
“It’s physically uncomfortable. The potholes, the dips, the uneven pavement have been brutal,” Forrest Hicks said.
A recently published report by TRIP, a transportation research non-profit, found that more than half of San Diego’s major roads are in what they said is poor or mediocre condition.
“I’m not surprised; I’ve seen other vehicles damaged by potholes,” Forrest Hicks said.
“There have been times when I’ve been driving on the road and I run over something and I’m like, ‘Oh snap, what’s that?’” Chris Lee said.
For many drivers, the problem goes beyond a rough ride.
The report states deteriorating roads can take a toll on your car through repairs, extra fuel consumption and added wear and tear.
“I don’t know how many times I’ve had to do alignments because of potholes, but they come up, I don’t see them, I hit them,” David Luttbeg said.
“Suspension repairs, wheel repairs, it’s expensive,” Forrest Hicks said.
“I’ve actually had two transmission leaks because I hit the bottom on dips here in San Diego over the year,” another driver said.
TRIP estimates San Diego drivers pay an average of $3,400 a year in operating costs, safety, and congestion issues.
Some told us that’s money they can’t afford to lose.
“It really sucks because I’m a college student. I don’t want to spend my money on things like that. I want to be spending it on buying a book for my chemistry class instead of on my car trying to get it fixed because of a pothole,” Ixchel Gutierrez said.
Others said it’s not just about saving money but about keeping drivers safe.
“I’d like to see the potholes fixed and the dips fixed,” another driver said.
While many San Diegans state the potholes are causing them headaches, on Monday, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and City Councilman Henry L. Foster III joined city crews as they paved the 30th mile of street resurfacing this fiscal year, stating that it was a new record for the city’s Mill-and-Pave Program.
