Have you ever worried about wrecking a new car while test driving it?
That nightmare became reality for a Canadian man who now owes a Chevrolet dealership more than $17,000 after crashing a Corvette during a test drive.
Kirby Sewell had ordered the high-performance Corvette, priced at approximately $121,000, through Gardner Chevrolet Buick GMC in Hope, British Columbia.
But during a June 2024 test drive, Sewell decided against buying the car.
After stopping at a truck stop to inspect the Corvette and take photos, he struck a concrete barrier while attempting to move out of another driver’s way, causing extensive damage to the passenger side.
The dealership spent approximately $10,000 on repairs before selling the Corvette for $115,000 after disclosing the damage.
Sewell argued in court that he should be protected from liability under British Columbia’s Motor Vehicle Act because he was driving the car with the dealership’s permission.
The judge disagreed, ruling that the law wasn’t intended to protect negligent drivers from their own mistakes.
On Oct. 8, a Supreme Court judge dismissed Sewell’s appeal, leaving him responsible for $17,182.23 in repair costs, depreciation and interest.
That’s one expensive test drive — especially considering he didn’t even buy the Corvette.
