A Silver Corvette ZR1X had just surpassed the factory quarter mile record when disaster struck, and the car took a hard turn into the wall causing heavy front-end damage.

Well, Corvette Nation. It looks like we may have our first public accident/crash/wreck of a new Corvette ZR1X.
Posting on Instagram, HutterPerformance had both good and bad news to share. The good news is that they announced that their modded Corvette ZR1X had surpassed the GM factory record time of 8.675 seconds @ 159.57 MPH at Kuhnle Motorsports Park in Thompson, Ohio.
Their time? 8.580 seconds @ 160.93 MPH!
While we take a moment to celebrate that time, we must also talk about the bad news that immediately followed the record breaking time.

In the post, HutterPerformance says a tire malfunction caused the Corvette to spin and it crashed into the retaining wall. We’ll defer to them for the cause, but as others pointed out, the ZR1X sure was looking very unstable at the end of its run, which is something that some of the Corvette engineers have cautioned when you strip a ZR1/ZR1X of all its carbon aero components. As you can see, the tall high wing, front dive planes, and the Gurney lip were all removed for these timed runs.
The post reports that the driver was okay following the crash with just some bruises. That’s something to be extremely thankful for and once again we get a real life example of just how much protection the occupants have in the C8 platform, even when exceeding the limits of both track and driver.

The video shows both the run from the starting box and then shows the POV view from inside the car. A quick walkaround following the crash shows the car with a heavily damaged front nose and missing a rear tire. Hutter says the car will be taken to a new GM body shop opening in Michigan for repairs.
As we have seen from other rebuilders, the issue with repairing these cars is much more difficult when the frame rails have been damaged. It usually comes down to whether its cost-effective for the repairs to happen at all. But since these cars are still extremely difficult to come by, they will probably throw as much money at it as possible to get it back on the drag strip.
