Oh man, was this a bad week for Corvettes at the track. In addition the C8 Z06 Corvette that we wrote about over the weekend which crashed into a wall at Bradenton Motorsports Park while racing a Nissan GT-R, we learned that two C8 ZR1s also had bad experiences at the track. One of those was the Arctic White 2026 ZR1 Coupe owned by Christian Wheeler.
Wheeler was at a open track event at Sebring International Raceway when his car broke traction and went into a wall. While the impact happened at roughly 20 mph, the damage was significant enough that a tow truck was called to remove the car from the track.
Wheeler detailed the incident in this lengthy post on his Instagram page which shows a video split screen of the car on the track and a look inside the cockpit. After driving through Turn 10, Wheeler says he got on the throttle a bit too aggressively while also abruptly changing the steering angle, causing the rear end to break loose. He says he then overcorrected which directed him into the wall. “Thankfully I burned a lot of speed off in the process and managed to reach the wall at just under 20 MPH,” he says in the post.
Wheeler handled the impact very well and he after striking the wall, he paused for a moment and then said, “Well, that’s the ZR1.” Luckily he didn’t do any damage to the retaining wall at Sebring, which would have come out of his pocket as well.
As for his ZR1, he believes the damage is centered on the bumper, fender, splitter and says the impact also caused a puncture in the front right radiator. He was able to drive the car onto his trailer for the ride home.
Next up, he will be getting estimates to get the car repaired. Wheeler said he didn’t have track insurance, and will paying out of pocket for the repairs.
The post on Instagram brought out some haters as expected, but it also drew out some great comments from those offering Wheeler encouragement and support while he deals with getting his car fixed. On that last point, we agree: Wheeler was the first C8 ZR1 owner to take his Corvette to the track, and while he is out there enjoying the car on tracks like Sebring, Daytona, or Orlando Speed World, the rest us can only live vicariously as he shared those experiences on social media.
Hopefully, the repair process will be without drama as well and we’re looking forward to seeing Wheeler and the ZR1 at the track once again.
