If You Own an Enzo, Carrera GT, or Other Hall of Fame NA Supercar, Beware the 2027 Corvette Stingray!

Recently, the blokes employed by the British motoring journal Evo got their lucky, tea and crumpet-stained hands on the definitive supercar of your author’s formative middle school years; the Ferrari Enzo.

As if the 650-horsepower V12 dream machine that was too good to continue the naming convention of its legendary F40 and F50 predecessors wasn’t enough, they also managed a rendezvous with The Prancing Horse’s last truly memorable halo model, the Enzo’s decade-newer follow-up, the hybrid LaFerrari.

Nostalgia for the older Earth-shattering Ferrari sent me down the rabbit hole of memory lane, where I rediscovered Aaron Robinson’s July 2003 Enzo test that once crowned the tower of magazines in my late-childhood room. After re-acquainting myself with the intricacies of my former poster-car – like its special $60-per-quart (that’s $109 in today’s money!) synthetic oil – and its guarded and fastidious maker – some of the test conditions mandated by Ferrari were more than a little suspicious – I clicked out of a simpler time to the C&D home page, where, coincidentally, A-Rob’s former employer had just posted a fully regimented shakedown of the LS6-imbued 2027 Corvette Stingray.

It wasn’t long into this back-to-back read that one thing became readily apparent; the aficionado out enjoying his now $8.5+ million Enzo in 2026 better not get too cocky and rev-happy with the grizzled roofer who pulls up next to him in a $74,000 C8 Corvette Stingray.

After muttering “what a time to be alive” under my breath, the realization that any reasonably-successful working-class American can walk into their local Chevy store and leave with Enzo-levels of go for less than $100k got me wondering how well the criminally overlooked – I’m as guilty of this as anyone because I find the widebodies so much better looking and aspirational – base C8 stacks up with the rest of history’s all-time great naturally aspirated supercars.

Disclaimer: Before getting started, I want to make it clear that Corvette Blogger is in no way claiming that the refreshed C8 is a better car than anything it’s being compared to in this piece; the cars discussed below have reached mythological status for reasons that extend far beyond raw numbers. But when you do boil them down to performance metrics, it’s flat-out astonishing how often the attainable, fully warrantied, daily drivable Chevy with cheap parts readily available, massive aftermarket support, and nearly 3,000 licensed service centers in the US not only keeps up with multi-million-dollar legends but surpasses their abilities… while making room for two sets of golf clubs, to boot!

While each enthusiast who closely follows the free-breathing corner of the go-fast niche is likely to have their own hierarchy, we came up with ten cars that are likely to show up on most lists of all-time turbo-free performance cars: Joining the Enzo in representing Ferrari is the 458 Speciale. From Porsche, we have the Enzo’s chief rival, the Carrera GT, and the present day 911 GT3. With mid and rear-engined candidates fielded, we turned to cars with front-mounted power in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, a fellow American in the Dodge Viper ACR-E, and the wonderful sounds of the Lexus LFA. No such list could be taken seriously without including a Z06, so we brought in two; the 2012 C6 with the Z07 track package, and the Stingray’s similarly equipped big brother. Finally, we decided to tag-in the McLaren F1 that is widely regarded as man’s finest road-going vehicular achievement.

The Stingray’s new 6.7L Small Block is the most powerful non-boosted V8 in General Motors history, but its 535 horses put it in the basement of this comparison, only ahead of the GT3’s 502 peak and the C6 Z’s 505 (the current Z06 ranks first with 670 ponies). Torque is another story, entirely. The Stingray’s 520 lb-ft. are second only to the 600 of the Viper’s massive 8.4L V10 while three of the renowned challengers don’t even crack the 400 barrier.

Acceleration and Top End

Ok, so far, the Stingray averages out in the middle of the pack of hall of famers, but when it comes time to flex those muscles, it really distinguishes itself. Its 2.7-second sprint to 60 is the second quickest in the pack after only its C8 Z06 stablemate’s 2.6. By 100 MPH the Z06 remains in first at 5.9 seconds, but the 2,500-pound McLaren shoots up to second while the Enzo and Carrera GT push the Stingray to 5th place.

Even though many contenders are accelerating faster by triple digits, the base C8’s superior launch pays off in the quarter mile. The Stingray covers 1,320 feet in 11-seconds flat, tied with the Speciale for second place behind the new Z06 and .1 ahead of the McLaren F1. The F1 does score the highest trap speed at 138 MPH, followed closely by the Enzo’s 136. The C8 Z traps 131 while its 7.0L C6 predecessor ties the big-aero Viper for second worst at 126. Despite its impressive ET, the Stingray is tied with the limited-run Lexus in the basement at 124 MPH.

The Stingray’s highly-publicized 200 MPH top speed puts it in rarified air and makes it the fastest of the Corvettes, but just shy of the 202-205 limits of the LFA, Speciale, and Carrera GT and well shy of the Enzo’s 218 and the 221 of the F1.

Braking and Handling

Along with the headline-grabbing acceleration numbers, Car and Driver’s testing regimen includes stopping from 70 MPH and lateral grip on a 300-foot skidpad. Aided by modern tire technology and downforce aiding wings, the best stoppers in the group are the Viper, the new Z06, and the GT3 that all shed 70 MPH in the high 130-foot range. The Stingray rides on less-aggressive rubber and lacks the focused aero of its contemporaries, but the 3,400-pounder’s 149-foot stop on regular steel brakes bests carbon-ceramic-clad 3,000-pound Enzo by two feet. The AMG, Lexus, and McLaren also took longer to stop in their prime (C&D wasn’t allowed to test the Speciale’s braking ability).

On the skidpad, the Z06 takes top honors by not letting go until 1.16 g as a testament to the C8 platform. The other top brakers were the only other cars to exceed 1.1 gs of grip while the Enzo, 2012 Z07, and Stingray make up the over 1 g club. The LFA and Merc both registered around 1 g, and data was unavailable for the Carrera GT, F1, and, again, the Speciale.

The Score Card

By assigning the first place finisher in each event 11 points, with 10 points going to second place, all the way down to a single point for last place, we’re left with the following takeaways: numbers wise, the worst of the 11 grails assembled is the Lexus LFA that only registered a tally of 26, falling to the 35 points of the Speciale despite the Ferrari sitting out three of the eight categories. Also in the 30s are the C6 Z06 and the 911 GT3 that recorded 37 and 39 points, respectively. The V10 Porsche halo car that missed out on lateral g points was next with a sum of 42, hot on the heels of the AMG Black Series that participated in everything but tended to land in the middle of the pack. 10 points up on the Mercedes, we had an unlikely tie between the McLaren F1 and the Viper ACR.

Which brings us to our top three. The blue-collar Stingray can hold its head high with a 57-point bronze medal effort. Silver went to the Enzo that helped inspire this not-quite-scientific shindig. Which means that, according to the numbers, with a whopping 71 points, the greatest super sports car ever made without any form of power-adder is the C8 Corvette Z06 – the fact that it features a high-revving singsongy engine so closely associated with most of the historical greats just adds icing on the cake.

Comparison Results

But wait, there’s one more aspect that really should be considered in the final pecking order; price. In this all-important category, the Stingray and the used Z06 are runaway winners and, even around double the cost of the other ‘Vettes, the new Z is somehow third and without coming up with a proper way to weight the grade for price, the McLaren still gets a point even with an unobtanium $25ish million asking price in 2026. With that consideration in place, we have some interesting shuffling that takes place. The old C6Z moves into a tie with the current GT3 with a final score of 47 points. Meanwhile, the C8 Z06 retains first place with a whopping 80 points, but the Stingray’s 11-point win on price point moves into second place, and, as a true 95% proposition for about 50% of the cash, makes a solid case that it is, in fact the best car of its kind ever offered for public consumption, and with a big rumbly cross-plane V8, it’s also extremely unique among this cohort – even after $15k in price creep, the one-time deal of the century still retains its crown, and with the new LS6 V8 is more desirable than ever!
