The Seahawks have designated running back Zach Charbonnet, who was injured in the playoffs last season, as returning to practice.

As the Seahawks look to get back on the winning track Sunday at Lumen Field against the Los Angeles Chargers, they are getting healthier — with one notable exception.

Rookie running back Jadarian Price did not practice Thursday due to a chest injury he has dealt with since the Arizona game on Sept. 20, the only player who did not take part on at least a limited basis. Price was listed as limited on Wednesday before sitting out Thursday. It will become clearer on Friday if the injury could hold him out of Sunday’s game.

As for the good news, that began in the morning when the Seahawks announced that running back Zach Charbonnet has been designated as returning to practice from the physically unable to perform list.

Charbonnet took part in practice on a limited basis, his first football activity since he suffered an ACL injury against the 49ers on Jan. 17 and had surgery in February.

Then, a little later, safety Julian Love, who sat out Sunday’s 33-31 loss at Washington after suffering a calf injury last Thursday, told reporters he expects to play against the Chargers, while fellow starting safety Ty Okada also took part in practice on a limited basis. Okada has not played this season due to a hamstring injury.

Charbonnet can practice for 21 days before the team either must elevate him to the 53-man roster or keep him on the PUP list and out for the season.

The expectation is obviously that Charbonnet will be elevated to the 53-man roster at some point before that window runs out — maybe sooner than later if Price’s situation is something that would cause him to miss games.

Charbonnet was placed on the PUP list to begin training camp, and because he remained on it to begin the regular season he had to miss at least four games, meaning he cannot play Sunday against the Chargers.

By rule, he can return as early as the Oct. 11 game against the 49ers. The 21-day window also means he could practice for a few weeks and be elevated for a return for games against Denver on Oct. 15 or the Chiefs on Oct. 25, which might be a more realistic timeline.

Regardless, Charbonnet is close to a return to the field and boosting the Seahawks’ running back position.

Quarterback Sam Darnold said having Charbonnet back is “huge for us as a team. … Just to have his presence, just the way that he leads by example, just coming to work and doing his job.”

Charbonnet led the Seahawks with 12 rushing touchdowns last season while gaining 730 yards on 184 carries, splitting time with Kenneth Walker III.

Walker took over a more significant role once Charbonnet was injured and won Super Bowl MVP honors with 135 yards on what were a season-high 27 carries.

After becoming a free agent in March, Walker signed a three-year deal worth up to just over $43 million with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Seahawks selected Price at 32nd overall as part of their plan to replace Walker. Playing into the equation in replacing Walker was also the expectation that Charbonnet would be back by midseason at the latest.

Thursday’s news means Charbonnet is indeed on track to be back at some point over the next three weeks. If Price’s chest injury means he has to miss time, that might increase the urgency for Charbonnet to get back even more quickly.

The Seahawks’ other running backs on the 53-man roster are Emanuel Wilson and George Holani, while Velus Jones Jr. is on the practice squad and was elevated for the New England and Washington games.

As for Love, he had interceptions in each of the Seahawks’ first two games when they held opponents to 17 combined points.

Without Love and Okada last weekend, the Seahawks went with Rodney Thomas II and A.J. Finley as the starting safeties as Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota threw three touchdowns.

“Yeah, feel good,” Love said when asked if he is planning to play Sunday. “Gonna try to push, obviously keep working and see how practice goes today, tomorrow. But I feel pretty good.”

Love explained that he injured the calf during a warmup on Thursday, calling it “kind of a random thing” and said that because of the quick turnaround with a flight on Friday to Washington, there wasn’t enough time to try to get past it to play against the Commanders.
