The Seahawks are not signing veteran running back Joe Mixon after he underwent a physical with the team, but they did bring in two other running backs.

Oh, how the Seahawks running back room turns.

It was dizzying to keep track of all the team’s moves over the last 24 hours to attempt to add depth to a position that has been hit by injuries through the first four games of the season.

When the dust appeared to finally settle Tuesday afternoon, the Seahawks had decided not to sign veteran Joe Mixon, a two-time Pro Bowl pick, after reviewing the results of his physical and MRI exams after it had been reported Monday that he was expected to sign.

They made official the signing of Robert Henry Jr. off Washington’s practice squad, which had been reported Monday, and signing former Chief Sealth standout Dontae McMillan to the practice squad.

Mixon had been expected to sign to the practice squad as he worked his way back after missing all of the 2025 season with foot and ankle injuries.

To fill the spot on the practice squad that was ticketed to go to Mixon, the Seahawks signed McMillan, a Seattle native who spent the last three years at Eastern Michigan and was in camp with the Baltimore Ravens before being waived at the end of the preseason.

The Seahawks waived safety A.J. Finley to make room for Henry on the 53-man roster and placed running back Jacardia Wright — who coach Mike Macdonald said last week is working through some injuries — on practice squad injured reserve.

The moves give the Seahawks four running backs on the 53-man roster as they prepare for the biggest game so far this season Sunday against the 49ers at Lumen Field — Emanuel Wilson, George Holani, Velus Jones Jr. and Henry.

The Seahawks, over the weekend, placed first-round pick Jadarian Price on injured reserve with a chest injury, meaning he has to sit out at least three more games.

They are unsure exactly when Zach Charbonnet will be able to make his 2026 debut. He returned to practice Thursday after opening the season on the physically unable to perform list following knee surgery in February.

That opened his 21-day practice window. Macdonald said Monday that Charbonnet will not play this week and a realistic target date for him could be the Oct. 25 game against the Chiefs with the Seahawks having a short week before a game Oct. 15 at Denver.

The Seahawks brought Mixon in for a workout Monday and had reached an agreement to sign him to a deal, pending the results of his physicals. Those tests were expected to include an MRI. After reviewing the tests, the Seahawks opted not to sign him.

Mixon, 30, missed all of last season with a foot injury suffered before the start of the 2025 season. He was released by Houston after the season and became a free agent.

While at least one national report Monday said the Seahawks “are signing” Mixon, the team had made clear that he still had to undergo physicals before anything would be official.

“Joe worked out this morning and is going through the process right now of whatever else it entails of how the process goes,” Macdonald said Monday afternoon.

The Seahawks appear likely to again go with Wilson and Holani against the 49ers.

But they are obviously intrigued by Henry, a player many thought could be a Day 3 pick before he went undrafted in April.

Henry played the last three years at the University of Texas-San Antonio and finished the 2025 season with 1,045 yards and an average of 6.9 per rush. He signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent and, after being waived at the end of the preseason, was signed to the team’s practice squad but did not play in any games this year.

Before transferring to UTSA in 2023, Henry played two seasons at Jones Junior College in Mississippi. In 2022 he won the inaugural Walter Jones Trophy, awarded each year to the nation’s top junior college player after rushing for 1,302 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The trophy is named after the Seahawks Hall of Fame left tackle, who played at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss., before transferring to Florida State.

Henry is listed by the Seahawks at 5 feet, 9 inches and 199 pounds and given jersey No. 34.

The Seahawks are likely hoping Finley will clear waivers and can re-sign to the practice squad. Finley started against Washington in place of the injured Julian Love and with Ty Okada also still out with a hamstring injury. Okada returned to practice last week and Macdonald said Monday that he has a chance to play against the 49ers.
