Hello,I am currently investigating why NVMe drives are not being detected by an HPE MR416i-p Gen10 Plus controller. My setup is non-standard and, of course, not officially supported. However, I would like to understand the technical reason why it does not work as expected. The system consists of:HPE DL380 Gen10HPE MR416i-p Gen10 Plus PCIe controllerHPE P22904-001 cabling kitHPE P20882-002 backplane in a Gen10 Plus drive cageIn this configuration, the controller is detected correctly, and both SAS and SATA drives operate without any issues.I then attempted to connect an M.2 NVMe SSD through a U.3 adapter. In this configuration, the server does not detect the NVMe drive. At this point, I started investigating the hardware side:The adapter routes the PCIe sideband signals according to the U.3 specification. More specifically:HPT0 = GNDHPT1 = GNDDualPortEn# = OpenThis should identify the device as an Undefined Single x4 configuration.Additionally:PRSNT# = OpenIFDET1# = GNDIFDET2# = GNDThis should identify the device as an SFF-TA-1001 PCIe device. Therefore, at least from the sideband identification perspective, the configuration does not appear to be incorrect. The adapter also includes:Integrated level shifters for the SMBus signalsA dedicated 12 V to 3.3 V regulatorDuring further investigation, I came across the different PCIe clocking architectures. My current understanding is that the HPE backplane expects devices that support an SRIS (Separate Refclk Independent SSC) configuration. Therefore, my current assumption is that most consumer M.2 NVMe SSDs only support a common-clock architecture and consequently may not be compatible with this backplane configuration.Could someone confirm whether this assumption is correct, or if there are additional factors that would prevent NVMe connectivity in this setup?Any insights would be greatly appreciated.Thank you!
