Students from across the region spent two inspiring days exploring the future of sustainable urban design at the inaugural Perse Pomeroy Sustainable Design Summer School, held at The Perse School on 20 and 21 July.
Led by internationally renowned architect, academic and broadcaster Professor Jason Pomeroy, the programme challenged students aged 15-18 to think creatively about some of the most pressing issues facing cities today, including climate change, urban growth and rising sea levels.
Centred on the theme “Float: Design the Future. Rethink the City”, The Perse Pomeroy Design Summer School invited participants to imagine innovative architectural solutions for communities adapting to a changing world. Through keynote lectures, global case studies and practical workshops, students explored sustainable design strategies and considered how architecture can help create more resilient and liveable cities.
Working collaboratively in teams, students developed proposals for floating architectural concepts that would enable people to live, work, learn and play in areas affected by rising sea levels. Throughout the programme, they refined their ideas while developing skills in creative thinking, visual communication and presentation.
Students also benefited from hearing Professor Pomeroy reflect on his own route into architecture and share advice on developing portfolios, gaining industry experience and preparing for university applications. Drawing on his experience and projects from his work at Pomeroy Studio, he provided valuable insights into the realities of studying and working within the profession.
The summer school concluded with team presentations and a friendly design competition, giving students the opportunity to showcase their ideas to peers and mentors. The winning team impressed judges with an iconic proposal inspired by a pearl oyster, celebrating Abu Dhabi’s historic connection to pearl fishing while addressing the challenge of future living on water. Certificates were presented to all participants in recognition of their achievement and engagement throughout the course.
Ben Keeble, Head of Art, Craft & Design at The Perse, said: “It was inspiring to see students approach complex global challenges with such creativity and enthusiasm. Their ideas demonstrated not only imaginative thinking, but also a strong understanding of how design can help create more sustainable and resilient communities. I was also impressed how students were able to work collaboratively to approach design solutions.”
The event provided a unique opportunity for aspiring architects, designers and innovators to deepen their understanding of sustainable design, complementing the skills developed through subjects such as Arts and Design, while gaining valuable experience of collaborative, project-based learning and creative problem-solving. Students left with fresh perspectives on how architecture can play a vital role in shaping more sustainable cities for the future.
