Year 10 pupils put artificial intelligence to the test during a hackathon run in partnership with Cambridge technology company FactTrace.ai. The event challenged teams to investigate a famous scientific mystery while learning about the opportunities and responsibilities that come with using AI.
Perse pupils took on the role of investigators in a hackathon designed to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can be used to analyse complex information and support decision-making.
Working with Cambridge-based start-up FactTrace.ai, Year 10 teams examined evidence connected to the Piltdown Man case, one of the most famous scientific hoaxes of the twentieth century. Using AI-powered tools, they evaluated historical evidence, compared competing theories and explored how different AI agents reach conclusions when presented with the same information.
The challenge encouraged pupils to think critically about the information generated by AI systems and to consider the importance of human oversight. Alongside developing technical skills, participants explored issues such as reliability, bias and the role of evidence in reaching trustworthy conclusions.
Ed Elliott, Head of The Perse, said: “The Perse was delighted to work with FactTrace.ai to run a hackathon for Year 10 students. The hackathon helped pupils understand the strengths and limitations of AI and how AI agents can be used to evaluate complex and conflicting information in pursuit of truth.”
FactTrace.ai, founded by Dr Loubna Bouarfa, develops technology designed to improve trust and transparency in AI-generated information. The hackathon gave pupils an opportunity to explore these ideas in practice while developing a deeper understanding of how AI systems can support, but not replace, human decision-making.
Our thanks to Dr Bouarfa and the FactTrace.ai team for sharing their expertise and creating such an engaging learning experience for our pupils.
