17-year-old moped rider killed in crash with truck in New London

A 17-year-old boy has died after a crash involving a moped and a truck in New London on Sunday evening, police said.
Police were called to the area of Ocean Avenue and Beech Drive around 5:08 p.m. after receiving a report of a crash with injuries, according to police.
When officers arrived, they found the injured 17-year-old moped rider and began providing medical aid. He was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity will not be released at this time because he is a juvenile, police said.
“My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends mourning the loss of a 17-year-old New London High School graduate who was killed tragically in a motor vehicle accident Sunday evening,” New London Mayor Michael Passero said in a statement. “Let us hold his loved ones close in our thoughts and prayers and honor their need for privacy as they navigate this difficult time. I am also keeping the other driver and his family in my thoughts and prayers and wishing them strength.”
The truck remained at the scene following the crash, according to police.
The New London Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded and is investigating what led to the crash.
“You can be assured that the New London Police will provide a detailed report following a thorough investigation,” Passero said. “I urge everyone to refrain from making judgments and to allow the facts to emerge before reaching any conclusions.”
