Iwo Jima Memorial on New Britain, Newington town line closed due to storm damage

The National Iwo Jima Memorial on the Newington and New Britain town line is closed until further notice after sustaining significant storm damage Friday night, according to the memorial.
A fallen tree brought down power lines, damaged a guardrail in the parking lot, and caused the memorial’s Eternal Flame to go out, the memorial said.
“The eternal flame has been out, probably for the first time since 1995, when it was dedicated,” said Elaine Schieffer, a member of the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation. “That eternal flame was dedicated in memory of all who fought and died in World War Two.”
There was more damage along Ella Grasso Boulevard, where a large tree branch struck a fence and several tribute flags.
“There’s a flag for each one of the 100 who died from the state of Connecticut in the battle,” Schieffer said. “And so some of the poles that hold the flags are damaged.”
Connecticut Natural Gas has shut off the gas supply to the memorial, while Eversource is handling electrical repairs.
The memorial is operated by an all-volunteer staff, which said it is assessing the damage and working to make necessary repairs.
“We know how meaningful this memorial is to so many who visit for reflection and peace,” the organization said in a Facebook post.
The organization is asking the community for donations to help cover repairs and maintenance. Those interested in contributing can donate through the National Iwo Jima Memorial’s website. For more information, contact IwoJimaMem.CT@gmail.com.
“In every war that we’ve had, you have people in the prime of their life that passed away,” said John Buckley of the New Britain Veterans. “They got killed in combat. Their whole life was gone. It’s a huge ripple effect. So just remembering these 100 men that were killed and didn’t get to live out the rest of their lives, like most of us, it’s just huge. It’s just very important.”
The memorial will remain closed until further notice.
