Investigators shared new details about the fire that ripped through The Dive, a popular floating bar and restaurant on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee Saturday.
The boat has been towed away from the Smalls Cove sandbar and is considered a total loss, according to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office, which is investigating what happened.
The fire was reported about 3:39 p.m., officials said. The Dive was open for business, but no one was hurt.
Firefighters from the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol and Alton, Gilford, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro knocked down the flames, according to the fire marshal’s office. They said that, while the investigation continued Sunday, it’s believed the fire started in the kitchen and is not suspicious.
Investigators, who were still looking to determine how many people were on the boat when the fire broke out, asked for anyone who was on the boat and hasn’t spoken with investigators should reach out by calling 603-223-4289 or emailing fmo@dos.nh.gov. They said the owners of The Dive are cooperating with the investigation.
The restaurant on Saturday shared photos on social media showing the extensive damage.
“Today has been the hardest day in our journey. Watching The Dive burn was absolutely heartbreaking, and we are devastated by this loss,” the post read. “What matters most, though, is that every single person made it off safely. For that, we are incredibly grateful.”
The Dive was destroyed by a fire on July 25, 2026.
The owners went on to thank “the true heroes” who jumped into action.
“To those onboard who fought the fire, and to the many people who swam over with their own fire extinguishers to help save The Dive—you showed incredible courage and selflessness. We will never forget your efforts,” the post continued. “The outpouring of love, support, and prayers we’ve already received has meant more to us than words can express. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
The Dive billed itself as “the coolest” floating bar and restaurant on Lake Winni. It could be found at local hot spots and sand bars on the lake, serving up “the tastiest cocktails, cold beer and mouth watering food,” according to its website, where Jamie and Betsy are listed as “your captains.”
“The Dive may be gone, but the amazing community around it is stronger than ever and the memories and the wonderful people & friends we have met through these 9 years we will always cherish,” The Dive’s owners concluded in Saturday’s Facebook post. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
