Recent storm knocks out power at Southbury horse farm for about 24 hours

A Southbury horse farm is recovering after Friday’s storm knocked out power for about 24 hours, leaving its owners scrambling to keep their horses cool and hydrated in the heat.
Brushy Hill Farms lost power during the storm, cutting off the fans used to help keep the horses comfortable. Co-owner Ev Lindeborn said her immediate concern was for the animals.
“The horses just wouldn’t have water and because of the immense heat, they wouldn’t have their fans,” she said.
On Saturday, Lindeborn and her daughter worked to care for the horses while waiting for power to be restored. They even considered trucking in water to help cool the animals. Heavy rain from the storm also caused minor flooding in the barn.
“When it pours that hard, there’s nothing you can do and nowhere for the water to go,” Lindeborn said.
Power was eventually restored after about 24 hours, bringing relief to the farm. But Lindeborn said the storm brought back difficult memories of devastating flooding two years ago.
“It was déjà vu and I know my daughter has PTSD every time it rains, and we worry for the animals,” she said.
During that storm, floodwaters inundated much of the farm, making the property look more like a lake. A waterline from the flooding is still visible on one of the barn doors.
“I had looked out and I saw all this water coming down Coachmans Drive and into our property,” Lindeborn said.
The flooding also caused significant property damage.
“It was devastating. We lost two horse trailers, the Jeep, a flatbed,” she said.
Brushy Hill Farms eventually recovered and installed new gutter systems designed to move water away from the property. Lindeborn said they now feel better prepared for future downpours.
“We as adults, we can handle it and we can do something different,” she said.
