The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) began a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar on 20 June 2026 over alleged examination irregularities. The party ended the protest on 25 July 2026 after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and the government assured action on examination reforms (here, here).

Following the incident, a video is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) with the claim that it shows police identifying and arresting students involved in the CJP protest one by one and taking action against them. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: The video shows police identifying and arresting students involved in the CJP protest one by one and taking action against them.

Fact: The video is unrelated to the CJP protest and shows an altercation involving AISA members at Maurice Nagar Police Station following protests over the UGC Draft Regulations. Although some CJP protesters were arrested in different states, the viral video is not related to those arrests. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to an Instagram post by Jamia Times, dated 14 February 2026, featuring the same footage. This confirms that the viral video predates the CJP protest and is unrelated to it. According to the post, members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) were allegedly threatened and verbally abused inside Maurice Nagar Police Station in the presence of police personnel.

Taking cues from this Instagram post, we searched the internet with relevant keywords and found multiple media reports (here, here) from February 2026 that featured screenshots matching the viral video. According to these reports, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemned the alleged abuse of All India Students’ Association (AISA) women leaders inside Maurice Nagar Police Station. AAP MP Sanjay Singh shared the video, alleging that AISA leaders Anjali and Neha were verbally abused and humiliated in the presence of police personnel.

The issue (here, here, and here) pertains to an incident in which members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) staged a protest outside Delhi University’s Faculty of Arts over the new UGC regulations, while another group was demonstrating against them. During the protest, YouTuber and content creator Richa Tiwari also arrived at the spot, following which an altercation broke out between the two sides. As the situation escalated, police intervened and took members of both groups to Maurice Nagar Police Station. Based on complaints filed by both sides, cross-FIRs were registered. The viral video captures the commotion inside and outside the police station during the incident.

We also found an Instagram post by AISA member Anjali (@anjali_du_), one of the women seen in the viral video. In the post, she alleged that following an altercation involving journalist Ruchi Tiwari during protests against the UGC Draft Regulations, she was subjected to harassment, including rape threats and the leaking of her personal information. She further claimed that when she and other AISA members approached Maurice Nagar Police Station to report the incident, they were verbally abused and threatened. Notably, Anjali’s Instagram video also included clips from the now-viral footage, further confirming that it was related to the same incident and not to any police action against CJP protesters after the Jantar Mantar demonstration.

While it is true that several individuals (here, here) involved in the CJP protests were arrested in various states, including Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, the viral video does not show those arrests. The Bihar and Assam Police later withdrew the cases registered against the protesters. CJP also held a meeting with the central government on the night of 27 July and protested the arrests. During a hearing on 28 July, the Supreme Court passed various interim directions, especially for the release of children below the age of 18 years having no criminal antecedents arrested or detained over the participation in protests. The court further observed that peaceful protest is a fundamental right of every citizen and that the use of police force without justifiable grounds is unwarranted.

To sum up, an old, unrelated video of an altercation involving AISA members is shared as visuals of police identifying and arresting students involved in the CJP protest.
