Between the Peak District and Cheshire Plain sits a historic market town best known for its industrial past and beautiful surroundings. Located just 20 minutes from Manchester and 1hr 45 minutes from London on the train, Macclesfield boasts unrivalled access to the spectacular landscapes of Tegg’s Nose, Macclesfield Forest and Lyme Park.
Often referred to by its preferred moniker of 'Silk Town' in a nod to its past as the world's biggest producer of the luxurious material, many of Macclesfield's old mills and workers residences remain intact today.
Today, its cobblestone streets, hills and former mills provide a wonderful backdrop for its strong food and drink scene and monthly Treacle Market. Trendy cafes, bakeries, and even a food hall make it a must-visit, but its strong roster of taprooms, bars and old boozers are what also makes it a popular night-time spot too.

One such pub can be found along the steep and winding cobbled streets of the Castle Quarter. This week, it's even been named one of the best pubs in the UK by the Telegraph in its new guide.
On Thursday (July 16), the publication unveiled its guide to the 650 Best Pubs in the UK, which has been chosen by a panel of pub experts on a number of criteria including on their welcoming and lively atmosphere, the quality of their drinks, and how they adopt a strong sense of community.
The top 650, which is not ranked in any particular order, includes 75 pubs in Scotland, 50 in Wales, 25 in Northern Ireland. It serves as an update to the publication’s Best 500 list from last year, and features 19 Greater Manchester pubs and eight in Cheshire.
Amongst the eight boozers in Cheshire sits The Castle. Dating back to 1721 it's one the county's most historic, and has been lauded as an ale house for 300 years.
The independently run freehouse celebrates ‘all things small’ and in recent years has racked up numerous awards since under the stewardship of Rebecca Prunty and refurbishment by the building’s owners in 2021. Its extensive makeover even won the pub The Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Historic England Conservation Award.
A rare example of a timeless, old-fashioned town pub, it has also been identified by CAMRA as having a nationally important historic pub interior. With its whitened brick, it’s thought the building started off as late 18th century cottages.
Though it might appear small from the outside, step over the threshold and you’ll find a warren of cosy rooms and seating nooks - from the Tap Room and Parlour to the fire-lit nook. Its dining area at the back was added a little later in the 19th century and out back there’s a little surprise with a covered space - a suntrap terrace if you head up the steps.
Moulded plaster ceilings, copper-topped tables, and bell pushes make for a charming experience, but the brilliant hatch bar is the real star of the show and is reminiscent of a traditional shop window. In winter, the fireplaces are lit and make it a great place to come to take refuge from the cold.
As you would hope, there’s an extensive selection of beers with local ales regularly changing and a commitment to independent local and regional breweries. Four continuously changing cask beers are always available, and some of the "Keg" beers are membrane keg - a beer container with an inner bag which keeps the beer isolated from the gas used to push it out.
If you pay a visit, look out for a homage to Joy Division’s Ian Curtis too, who is honoured at the back of the pub with framed pictures and memorabilia. While it’s not known if he ever visited, another North West act certainly did.
The Beatles famously popped in for a pint in 1963 after they played a gig at the town’s Club El Rio in Queen Victoria Street. And one customer has a photo of the foursome enjoying a drink there.
There’s no parking, but the main Waters Green public car park is just 100m away. Macclesfield railway and bus stations are both within a few minutes walk away with direct routes to Manchester city centre.
