It's set to be 'familiar, fruity and funky'
A popular independent coffee shop in Manchester has announced it will be opening a new café in a historic spot.
Fort, situated on Deansgate, has built up a reputation as one of the best places for coffee in the city since opening its doors as a pop-up back in 2023.
The cafe and roastery has previously earned such praise from the likes of The Telegraph and Conde Nast Traveller, who heralded it last year for serving ‘one of the city’s best flat whites’.

Following on from its successes, bosses of the ‘slick’ and ‘minimalistic’ coffee shop have announced that they will be opening a second, bigger site in the Northern Quarter.
The new Fort café will be situated within the Grade II-listed Sevendale House on Lever Street. The spot is the former home of the Foundation Coffee House, which opened in 2015 and remained there until December last year. It was then briefly replaced by Northern Pour, who now have cafes on Marble Street and King Street.
In a statement on social media, the team at Fort said they intend to revamp their original Deansgate spot, which will be closed for a week as a result, before operating both sites simultaneously from the beginning of August.
The post wrote: “So, we’ve finally found a long-term home. But with a twist. I’ll keep it brief as there is plenty of good **** to come, but we will be opening on Lever Street in the NQ. This will happen on 28th July, so next week. Classic us leaving everything until the last min.
“Deansgate will close, for a week or so, while we give it a fresh coat of paint and sort it out a little, it really needs it. Then we’ll reopen the Deansgate shop, which will operate as it has. This will then stay for the foreseeable in the same location.”
Bosses said the bigger space with their new Lever Street unit meant they would be able to expand on their offerings - going beyond their previous selection of coffees, pastries and light bites - due to now having a kitchen space.
The update added: “Our Lever Street site will run the same coffee program as our existing Deansgate site. So Familiar, fruity, funky etc etc.
“But here you’ll be able to have some scran. As fortunately for us (and you) there is a kitchen. Having the space and facilities to do so was a big driver of this decision for us.
“Then as things settle, think evenings, wines, pints and some lil nibbles, good friends, good music, but more about that in the future.”
The news was met with excitement and support from locals and fellow businesses. Withington cafe Something More Productive replied: "Well this is a great decision! So excited for you." Deansgate restaurant and bakery Doux Chaton added: “Congratulations dream team! Good luck next week." Federal cafe added: "WOW".
Fort is on 255 Deansgate, Manchester M3 4EN (Closing July 28, set to reopen in August) and will open on Sevendale House, Lever St, Manchester M1 1JB from July 28.
