The Lebanon front remains the most immediate test. A US-backed Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire took effect Friday after an exchange of fire earlier that day, but Israeli strikes reported afterward have shown how easily the framework could fray.Pakistani and Qatari mediators said Monday that the first round of high-level US-Iran talks in Switzerland ended with “encouraging progress,” with the two sides agreeing to a 60-day road map toward a final deal and further technical negotiations in the coming days.Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the talks had concluded “successfully” in a “positive and constructive” atmosphere, while a joint Pakistani-Qatari statement said the sides also agreed on mechanisms to address the Lebanon front and maintain safe commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. After US-Iran deal, can Pakistan sustain regional mediator role?Commuters ride past an electronic board featuring Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif (L) with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, displayed in front of the Serena Hotel in Islamabad on June 17, 2026, after the US-Iran peace deal announcement. — Aamir QURESHI / AFP via Getty ImagesPakistan’s sudden rise as a lead mediator in the US-Iran war has given Islamabad a rare diplomatic opening, but also a risky burden. By helping secure the ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the first direct US-Iran talks in decades, Pakistan has positioned itself as a serious regional intermediary with access to both Washington and Tehran. The harder phase now begins. The 60-day negotiation window will test whether the preliminary understanding can survive disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, missile capabilities and the Lebanon front.Analysts say Pakistan can facilitate dialogue and mobilize pressure through partners such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt, but it cannot enforce compliance. Read Sabena Siddiqui’s analysis.Syria president denies wanting to intervene in Lebanon'We are looking for economic channels between Lebanon and Syria, not military ones,' Sharaa said — LOUAI BESHARASyrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Sunday that Damascus is seeking economic, not military channels with Lebanon, rejecting suggestions by US President Donald Trump that Syria could help fight Hezbollah. In an interview with Al Mashhad, Sharaa said Syria had proposed to Washington that the Lebanon war must stop and that solutions should include political, economic, social and security measures addressing Syrian, Lebanese and Israeli concerns. Trump has repeatedly floated a Syrian role against Hezbollah, saying he was “close to giving it over to Syria.” Sharaa said Syria had tools to help Lebanon, but only with Lebanese agreement.India in talks to sell supersonic BrahMos missile to UAEThe Indian Army's BrahMos missile launcher is displayed during the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, India, January 26, 2026. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/File Photo India is in early talks with the United Arab Emirates to sell several defense systems, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Akashteer automated air defense system, Reuters reported Monday, citing Indian sources. The discussions come as Abu Dhabi looks to expand its arms procurement after being heavily targeted by Iran during the recent Middle East war and seeks stronger protection for the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters said any BrahMos sale would require Russian approval because the missile is jointly developed by India and Russia, though one source said that was unlikely to block a deal.
