Sign up here.Thanks for reading,Ezgi (ezgi_akin)Vance says Switzerland talks laid 'good foundation' for final dealUS Vice President JD Vance struck an upbeat tone after the direct talks — Nathan HowardUS Vice President JD Vance said Monday that negotiators had laid a “very good foundation” for a final agreement with Iran following a marathon first round of talks in Switzerland aimed at turning last week’s memorandum of understanding into a broader settlement.The first round of talks focused on keeping the ceasefire alive while negotiators worked through the harder issues: Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, frozen assets and the regional files tied to the war.Vance said the negotiations produced early agreements on maintaining commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, supporting ceasefire arrangements and continuing technical talks in the weeks ahead as both sides work toward a longer-term deal.Reuters reported that the talks also produced a mechanism aimed at ending fighting in Lebanon and a communications line to support safe commercial shipping through Hormuz. The Lebanon front remains the most immediate test. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/File Photo India is in early talks with the United Arab Emirates to sell several defense systems, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Akashteer automated air defense system, Reuters reported Monday, citing Indian sources.The discussions come as Abu Dhabi looks to expand its arms procurement after being heavily targeted by Iran during the recent Middle East war and seeks stronger protection for the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters said any BrahMos sale would require Russian approval because the missile is jointly developed by India and Russia, though one source said that was unlikely to block a deal.
